{"id":4119,"date":"2022-06-20T09:37:07","date_gmt":"2022-06-20T08:37:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/economics\/?p=4119"},"modified":"2022-06-20T15:50:24","modified_gmt":"2022-06-20T14:50:24","slug":"workshop-microeconomic-approaches-to-development-economics-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/economics\/2022\/06\/20\/workshop-microeconomic-approaches-to-development-economics-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Workshop: Microeconomic Approaches to Development Economics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"lead\">From child marriage to climate change, conflict to wellbeing, from India to Pakistan via Uganda and Tanzania, this Dereck workshop was both diverse and International.<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The 3rd Research Workshop on &#8216;Microeconomic Approaches to Development Economics&#8217; took place in the sunshine at Kent this week.\u202f A dynamic 2 day event hosted by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/development-economics\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Development Economics Research Group at Kent (DeReCK), <\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">with a diverse range of papers presented, great policy discussions, fruitful interactions and connections.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The workshop began with a presentation by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/economics\/people\/432\/amirapu-amrit\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Dr Amrit Amirapu<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> from the School of Economics on a research project investigating how a recent change in child marriage law in Bangladesh affected attitudes and behaviour in relation to the practice. The presentation was following by a policy discussion by Ms. Poonam Muttreja from the NGO <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/PUof34jc6j\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Population Foundation of India<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> who provided an overview of child marriage practices in India, concerns about a new proposed child marriage law in the country and the implications of the research findings for the Indian context.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This was followed by a presentation by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/site\/vandewallelore\/home\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Dr Lore Vandewalle<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> of The Graduate Institute in Geneva on a research project investigating on how access to free childcare affects labour supply, earnings of family members and child development based on an experiment conducted in Uganda. Dr <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/site\/khushboosurana21\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Khushboo Surana<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> from York University presented finding from an ongoing study using matrimonial ads from Canada, France and India over a 45-year period to study the evolution of partner preferences.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the last session of the day, Dr <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/site\/maertensannemie\/home\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Annemie Maertens<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> from the Sussex of University presented findings from a study on restoring farmers&#8217; trust in the fertiliser market in Tanzania. And Dr <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ifs.org.uk\/people\/profile\/417\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Britta Augsburg<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> from the Institute of Fiscal Studies presented findings from a paper on how gender differences in perceptions and bargaining power affects sanitation investments by rural Indian households. Ms. Heather Arney from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/water.org\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Water.org<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> joined online to give an overview of the organisation\u2019s work to promote water and sanitation investments around the world and discuss the policy implications of the research presented by Dr Augsburg.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">On the second day of the workshop, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/economics\/people\/2276\/clots-figueras-irma\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Professor Irma Clots-Figueras<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202fCo-Director of DeReCK presented a paper investigating how climate change is affecting political participation in India.
