We&#8217;ve had a very productive year at the school, despite the pandemic, working on groundbreaking research as well as preparing the next generation of economists with a skillset and the critical awareness to head out into the world and make a difference.<\/p>\n<h2>The pandemic didn&#8217;t stop us&#8230;<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Year-in-Industry student <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/economics\/2021\/02\/11\/year-in-industry-student-tayla-leigh-dos-santos-decided-to-see-her-placement-during-lockdown-as-an-opportunity\/\">Tayla-Leigh Dos Santos<\/a> <\/strong>decided to see her placement year at <span data-contrast=\"auto\">Kimberly Clark<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span>during a global pandemic &#8216;as an opportunity&#8217;. Little did she know that toilet roll was about to be a currency all of its own and eCommerce set to become a major component of every business.<\/li>\n<li>The Economics Society were able to adapt their annual Economics Summit to host a bigger and better virtual event. Society Committee Member, Shivali Raichura, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/economics\/2021\/03\/24\/a-healthier-economy-the-third-annual-economics-society-summit\/\">blogged about the highlights<\/a><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/economics\/2021\/03\/02\/what-can-economics-and-epidemiology-learn-from-each-other\/\"><strong>What can \u2018economics\u2019 and \u2018epidemiology\u2019 learn from each other?<\/strong><\/a> This workshop organised by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/economics\/people\/2993\/makris-miltos\">Professor Miltos Makris<\/a> with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.econ.cam.ac.uk\/people\/faculty\/fmot2\">Flavio Toxvaerd<\/a> (University of Cambridge), discussed the complex relationship between epidemiological dynamics, economic decisions and government interventions, specifically in the context of a global pandemic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000\">Student and staff winners<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/economics\/2021\/04\/16\/introducing-mercy-the-business-start-up-journey-winner\/\">Mercy Adeniji<\/a> <\/strong>was the 2021 Business Start-up Journey Winner, a competition\u00a0open to all students across the University, for her business VeGate \u2013 a Vegan food delivery service.<\/li>\n<li>Joel Pointon won a School dissertation prize for his work on <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/economics\/2021\/07\/02\/researching-the-ethnicity-wage-gap\/\">the ethnicity wage gap<\/a><\/strong> concluding that Economics needs to focus its efforts on this form of inequality.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/economics\/people\/437\/chadha-jagjit\">Professor Jagjit Chadha<\/a> received an OBE in the Queen&#8217;s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/economics\/2021\/06\/15\/professor-jajgit-chadha-receives-obe-in-queens-birthday-honours-list\/\">June Birthday Honours list<\/a>,<\/strong> which had a special focus on the extraordinary efforts made by individuals across the country during the pandemic.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/economics\/2021\/03\/22\/how-effective-was-eat-out-to-help-out\/\"><strong>How Effective was Eat Out to Help Out?<\/strong><\/a> PhD candidate Yannis Galanakis won the Summer Vacation Research Competition (SVRC) for his project examining the impact of the policy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Everyday Economics<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/economics\/2021\/05\/12\/launching-everyday-economics\/\"><strong>Our new Outreach programme<\/strong><\/a>, Everyday Economics, designed by students to teach everyday finances to 16-18-year-olds, launched in schools across the country.<\/li>\n<li>We launched an exciting new undergraduate programme in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/economics\/2021\/01\/19\/economics-with-data-science-undergraduate-programme-launched\/\">Economics with Data Science<\/a><\/strong>, one of the first of its kind in the UK.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Ending in Celebration!<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Unable to gather for graduation as normal this year, the School of Economics came together to celebrate our final-year students in <a href=\"https:\/\/thegulbenkian.co.uk\/?start_date=&amp;end_date=\">The Gulbenkian<\/a> with some help from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kentonline.co.uk\/kmtv\/\">KMTV<\/a> &#8211; not in our usual grand style in Canterbury Cathedral, but in a livestream which made for a different, perhaps more personal kind of celebration, sharing students&#8217; memories and stories of their time at Kent. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/economics\/news\/3191\/a-finalist-celebration\"><strong>Watch here<\/strong><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kentonline.co.uk\/kmtv\/\">.\u00a0<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/economics\/news\"><strong>Keep up to date with the latest news from the School of Economics<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It couldn&#8217;t be a more important time to study economics.
