{"id":2531,"date":"2021-02-11T17:05:10","date_gmt":"2021-02-11T17:05:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/economics\/?p=2531"},"modified":"2022-01-19T11:35:29","modified_gmt":"2022-01-19T11:35:29","slug":"year-in-industry-student-tayla-leigh-dos-santos-decided-to-see-her-placement-during-lockdown-as-an-opportunity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/economics\/2021\/02\/11\/year-in-industry-student-tayla-leigh-dos-santos-decided-to-see-her-placement-during-lockdown-as-an-opportunity\/","title":{"rendered":"Finding Opportunities in Difficult Circumstances"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"lead\">Year in Industry student Tayla-Leigh Dos Santos decided to see her placement year amid a global pandemic &#8216;as an opportunity&#8217; and has been retained by her placement company, Kimberley Clark, during her return to Kent and her last year of study. <\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Let\u2019s start by rewinding to my second year. I began my applications for placements as early as possible; we had been advised that it may take many rejections before we were asked for an assessment. So I created a spreadsheet to monitor my applications. Many applications, numerical reasoning tests and video interviews later, I finally got invited to some assessment centers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">My second assessment was at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kimberly-clark.com\/en\">Kimberly Clark<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0for a role in ecommerce and digital<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. I walked into the office and felt welcomed immediately, the day consisted of presentations, group tasks and discussions. I was delighted with how it went, and the team really felt like a family. This was where I wanted to work! This was Spring 2020. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Little did I know this industry was about to explode.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I had no idea when I applied that the job\u00a0I was entering was going to become a heavy focus for every business going forward.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Toilet roll was about to become Gold! And eCommerce was about to become a major component of every business.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/economics\/files\/2021\/02\/Tayla-Leigh-Dos-Santos-2-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2533\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/economics\/files\/2021\/02\/Tayla-Leigh-Dos-Santos-2-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"424\" height=\"506\" \/><\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">At the start of my placement, I was told that it was my responsibility to shape the path of my placement, I was able to get involved in projects and tasks that I\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">thought would enable me to explore my future career path.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I can count on one hand how many times I was able to go into the office, my introductions, meetings and training sessions have all been online. \u201cYou\u2019re on mute\u201d was the most commonly used phrase for the first few months.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Toilet paper becoming such a precious commodity to the entire UK population and eCommerce becoming essential to daily life related directly to my role. It was exciting to work in this fast-paced environment where my sector became the centre of everything and companies looked to build eCommerce as fast as possible. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Data became more important than ever, I decided I was going to shape my placement to Data, Analytics and measurement.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I built a brand-new tool for markets all over the world<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to enable the business to monitor, visualise and analyse their online presence in a simple and effective way. I couldn\u2019t believe the impact I was making on such a big corporation in many different countries. Also I was growing as a person and finding opportunities in this rapidly changing environment. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">COVID-19 has certainly been strange and a difficult time for many of us. I tried to view this challenge as an opportunity. The pandemic brought significant changes to the online world and these changes became my world, the changes built a perfect foundation for me. I had no idea when I applied that the job I was entering was going to become a heavy focus for every business going forward.&#8217;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201c<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Our most significant opportunities<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u202fwill be found in times of\u202f<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">greatest<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u202fdifficulty.\u201d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8211;\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Thomas S.
