{"id":150,"date":"2014-11-04T12:10:45","date_gmt":"2014-11-04T12:10:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/economics\/?p=150"},"modified":"2014-11-11T13:17:54","modified_gmt":"2014-11-11T13:17:54","slug":"no-silver-bullet-for-closing-the-gender-gap-in-patriarchal-societies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/economics\/2014\/11\/04\/no-silver-bullet-for-closing-the-gender-gap-in-patriarchal-societies\/","title":{"rendered":"No \u2018Silver Bullet\u2019 for Closing the Gender Gap in Patriarchal Societies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #444444;font-family: 'Open Sans','sans-serif';font-size: 10.5pt\">Research by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/economics\/staff\/profiles\/zaki-wahhaj.html\"><span style=\"color: #0563c1\">Dr Zaki Wahhaj<\/span><\/a>, a senior lecturer at Kent School of Economics, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.niazasadullah.com\/p\/about-niaz.html\"><span style=\"color: #0563c1\">Professor M Niaz Asadullah<\/span><\/a> from the University of Malaya, has been highlighted in an article in <em><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans','sans-serif'\">The Conversation<\/span><\/em> on this year\u2019s Nobel Peace Prize winners, Malala Yousafzai and Kailash Satyarthi.\u00a0Both award winners were recognised for \u2018their struggle against the suppression of children and young people and for the right of all children to education\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #444444;font-family: 'Open Sans','sans-serif';font-size: 10.5pt\">Zaki Wahhaj and M Niaz Asadullah argue that the lives of adolescent girls in patriarchal societies are constrained by multiple norms, regarding marriage, childbearing, employment, etc. and programmes and policies that focus on just one of these constraints at the exclusion of others will fail to make a comprehensive difference in their lives.
