Dr Penélope Pacheco-López, Senior Lecturer in Economics and Director of Placements, joined a panel discussion to share insights on industrial policies and strategies aimed at tackling regional economic disparities and promoting balanced development in Mexico.

Dr Penélope Pacheco-López recently participated as a panellist in a thought-provoking event centred around economic development and regional disparities in Mexico.

The event brought together experts to share their research and insights on “Economic Development, Trade and Innovation: Pathways for Growth and Global Integration”. Dr Penélope Pacheco-López in particular presented research on the widening economic inequality between Mexico’s Northern and Southern regions, particularly since the 1990s.

The panel discussion highlighted the importance of addressing this divergence in growth and the role of industrial policy in promoting balanced development across Mexico. As a panelist, Dr Penélope Pacheco-López emphasised the need for targeted strategies to support the Southern states, such as encouraging foreign direct investment, fostering innovation, and improving local infrastructure and workforce development.

“It was a great opportunity to present and discuss robust academic research on economic development from alternative perspectives.”

Dr Penélope Pacheco-López

The event provided an excellent platform for Dr. Pacheco-Lopez and other experts to engage in meaningful dialogue, exploring various perspectives on the challenges and potential solutions for achieving inclusive economic growth in Mexico. It served as a testament to the vital role that academic research and collaboration play in informing public discourse and shaping effective policy decisions for the betterment of the country and its people.
