Celebrating Excellence: Prize-Giving Ceremony for First-Year Economics Students

We recently had the pleasure of hosting a special prize-giving ceremony to honour the outstanding achievements of two incoming second economics students, Catherine Rabu and James Chenery. These two students were recognized for their exceptional academic performance during their first year.

The prize was generously donated by Mark Preston, chair of our university council and one of our distinguished alumni. Mark studied Economics and Accountancy with us in the early 1980s and was himself a recipient of a similar prize. During the ceremony, he delivered an honest and motivating speech, sharing how the recognition he received as a student had a profound impact on his confidence and future success.

Mark highlighted that receiving the prize was a key turning point in his life, helping him to believe in his abilities and laying the foundation for his later achievements. Now, as a successful leader, he wishes to provide others with the same encouragement, hoping to inspire young economists to pursue their goals with confidence.

“I am always delighted to have a chance to meet our students and to be able to recognise Catherine and James in this way was a particular joy.”

In his speech, Mark also reflected on the importance of economics, noting that while markets do not always function as described in textbooks, the deep understanding gained from studying economics equips students with the tools to navigate the complexities of the world. He emphasized that the analytical and critical thinking skills learned through an economics degree are invaluable, not just in professional careers but throughout life.

By giving back to the university community, Mark hopes to empower Kent graduates to thrive and to make a meaningful impact on the world.

The ceremony was a memorable occasion, celebrating the outstanding achievements of Catherine Rabu and James Chenery, while also highlighting the enduring value of education, mentorship, and recognition. We are incredibly grateful to Mark Preston for his generosity and inspirational words, and we look forward to seeing where Catherine and James’s journeys take them.

Congratulations once again to our prize winners!
