On the 16th March 2024, the Economics Society at Kent held their Summit: “Navigating Climate Change and Sustainability in the Global Economy”.

This keenly awaited event brought together experts and enthusiasts alike – ESG investment analysis, environmental economics, academia, and beyond – to delve into the intersection of climate change, sustainability, and economic dynamics.

Key topics included the trade-off between investment returns and sustainability, valuing carbon, and government policies and intervention.

Our students and academics connected with industry frontrunners who are shaping the future of economics and sustainability, explored interactive exhibits highlighting pioneering green initiatives, and joined dynamic discussions on implementation strategies.

“The summit’s interactivity element revealed how we can learn from each other, rather than just one person telling us what the answer should be. And that’s really what a university education is about, it’s about learning from each other.”

Dr Amanda Gosling, Head of School

With diverse perspectives and innovative solutions, attendees explored the challenges and opportunities presented by climate change within the context of the global economy. From insightful discussions to actionable strategies, the summit sparked inspiration and collaboration, highlighting the crucial role that our students play in addressing pressing global issues.

The summit was very well received, with one student commenting: “It’s good to weigh-up the policy approach to sustainable economics versus the investment approach.”

“The point of the event is that this should be the first of many, hopefully we’ll do more in the future. Although I’ll be leaving this year, it’s about handing over to Matthew and to Sean and other members that can run these events, to move forward into the next academic year and the year after.”

Scott Gunyon, President of Kent Economics Society

We’re grateful to everyone who contributed to the success of the event—our speakers, sponsors, volunteers, and attendees.

Stay tuned for more updates from the Kent Economics Society as we all continue our efforts towards a greener future.
