Salvatore Ingenito, is one of the first cohort studying our new Economics with Data Science BSc. We asked him why he chose to take this brand new course and why he feels it is so relevant.
‘Hello! My name is Salvatore and I am a first-year undergraduate student in Economics with Data Science at the University of Kent in Canterbury.
I did my high school studies in Italy, where I am from, and I came to England two years ago.
At the question “why did you decide to study Economics with Data Science” I can -proudly- answer that the main reason is because I like to understand what is happening around us, why this is happening and how this can influence the world we live in and our way of life.
‘For a world very reliant on technology as ours, having these skills can be very profitable and, of course, very in demand in the job market.’
I truly believe Economics gives you the knowledge to undertake rational decisions that reflect real world’s dynamics. I don’t mean that Economics will help you avoid every mistake that you might incur throughout your life. However, let me tell you, you will be able to minimise your losses and live regret-free, getting the most from your life.
Data Science is a subset of Artificial Intelligence (commonly known as AI), which tends to merge statistics, data analysis and of course, the scientific method. Through the knowledge of these fields, you will be able to understand the meaning and insight of sets of data.
I am really satisfied with how the University of Kent combined Economics with Data Science in this degree. I would define them as complementary as one helps the understanding of the other and vice versa, and for a world very reliant on technology as ours, having these skills can be very profitable and, of course, very in demand in the job market.
Another question I am often asked is “why did you decide to study in the United Kingdom?”, and if you are an international student I am sure you will find this part very useful.
The United Kingdom is a very dynamic country with one of the strongest economies in the world and a renowned for technological advancement. The University of Kent, moreover, offers state-of-the-art facilities, provided with all the necessary to efficiently help you undertake your studies and maximise your intellectual development. Professors are very prepared and available to help you, especially if English isn’t your first language, and are keen to provide individual feedback and help if necessary.
I haven’t been at the University of Kent for long, but believe me, I already feel very mentally stimulated and with an enormous load of new skills which are going to be essential once I complete my degree and head out into the job market.
So, if you are a curious and analytical person, who enjoys enlarging your understanding of real-world issues and make efficient rational choices, Economics with Data Science at the University of Kent is an excellent pick, that can make you develop new skills and stimulate your interior growth to become an active citizen of the society we live in.
Additionally, if you are an international student and you are very interested to study in a country that is devoted to scientific and technological development, the United Kingdom is a prolific place, full of chances and opportunities.
Salvatore Ingenito is in his second year studying Economics with Data Science BSc Hons.
