What did your role involve at HM Treasury?
The job involved producing economic reports on supply-side economic growth issues; leading on external engagement with academics and think tanks, in particular organising seminars and roundtables; and producing a monthly round-up of supply-side economic reports.
What was the most interesting aspect of your placement year?
The most interesting aspect was getting to
represent the Treasury in high profile situations; for example, supporting a budget debate at the House of Commons, accompanying a Minister on an official visit and presenting research at Number 10.
What advice would you give to students who are looking to undertake a year in industry?
My advice on getting a placement is get organised and apply as early as possible. It is also important to consider factors beyond the job role; where you’re going to live during your placement and in final year, will you be okay with the possibility of not being with friends at university during final year?
Other than the obvious benefit of having something great to put on your CV, what do you feel you got out of your year in industry?
My placement has improved my confidence, particularly in talking to more senior colleagues, as I was exposed to many situations where I had to put across my opinion. It has improved my writing skills, as I was required to write in many styles (letters, reports, presentations, briefing notes); this has really helped when writing essays in my final year. I also made some great friends and important work contacts.
Has your experience changed your plans for the future?
I had always planned to go into the public sector after graduating, so my placement just confirmed that it is the right career path for me.
What’s next after graduation?
I am in the process of applying for public sector graduate schemes. Hopefully, one of these opportunities will come to fruition and I will be back working in government soon!
