Unexpected careers

Students graduating

Leaving University can be a daunting prospect especially if you are unsure about what you would like to do as a career.

Graduates who have degrees in Economics typically go into finance related positions such as Investment Banker, Investment Analyst, Actuaries, Chartered Accountants or work as Economists in public bodies, financial institutions and private companies. However, graduates with a degree in Economics shouldn’t feel that they are restricted to these types of jobs. The University of Kent Careers Service and Prospects have useful information on other careers students with Economics degrees have gone on to do. These include insurance underwriter, management consultant, market researcher, retail merchandiser, risk manager and quantity surveyor. Many employers accept applications from graduates with good degrees from any subject area, they may not have particular preferences for degree subjects.

And remember most people change careers several times over their working life, so what you might choose to do straight after graduating you may not end up doing in 5, 10 or 20 years’ time.
