Summer Schools are about more than just learning content – they\u2019re about connection, community, and the memories made outside the seminar room. We\u2019ve planned a series of social events designed to showcase the best of Kent\u2019s natural beauty, historic charm, and welcoming atmosphere. We have planned a number of events for students to look forward to.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Welcome Reception<\/h3>\n

Sunday 20 July<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

We\u2019ll begin the Summer School with a welcome reception on campus following opening remarks from EASP, the organiser, and the Head of the School of Psychology. Afterwards, enjoy drinks, pizza, and live music courtesy of Professor Dominic Abrams\u2019s band. It\u2019s a relaxed and joyful way to meet everyone and kick things off.<\/span><\/p>\n

Evening Walk in Blean Woods<\/span><\/h3>\n

Monday 21 July<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

On Monday evening, join us for a guided walk through the beautiful and ancient Blean Woods, one of the largest areas of continuous woodland in England. This historic forest has been managed for centuries and is home to rare wildlife, winding trails, and a peaceful, atmospheric landscape. It\u2019s the perfect chance to unwind and take in the scenery with new colleagues.<\/span><\/p>\n

Historic Pub Dinners<\/h3>\n

Wednesday 23, Thursday 24, and Friday 25 July<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

From Wednesday to Friday, different workstreams will enjoy a three-course dinner at The Parrot, Canterbury\u2019s oldest pub. Located in one of the city\u2019s best-preserved 15th-century buildings, the pub is named after the monks of St Radigund at Bradsole near Dover and features a stunning oak-panelled private dining room upstairs. You’ll enjoy locally sourced food, lively conversation, and the warm, storied atmosphere of one of Canterbury\u2019s hidden gems.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

White Cliffs of Dover and White Cliffs of Dover<\/h3>\n

Saturday 26 July<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

We\u2019ll travel by coach to visit two iconic Kent landmarks. First, we\u2019ll explore the White Cliffs of Dover – one of the UK\u2019s most recognisable natural features. Towering 350 feet above the sea and just 21 miles from France, the cliffs have long symbolised the gateway between Britain and Europe – an especially fitting destination for EASP. Next, we\u2019ll visit Leeds Castle, often described as \u201cthe loveliest castle in the world.\u201d With its fairy-tale moat, gardens, and rich history, it offers a glimpse into Britain\u2019s royal and medieval past. A packed lunch will be provided, and in the evening, students can enjoy dinner back in Canterbury at one of its many excellent restaurants.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Trip to Margate<\/h3>\n

Sunday 27 July<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

We\u2019ll hop on a train to the vibrant seaside town of Margate, just 35 minutes from Canterbury. You\u2019ll be free to explore at your own pace – whether that means relaxing on the beach, visiting the Turner Contemporary art gallery, or riding vintage amusements at Dreamland (including the oldest wooden roller coaster in the country). Margate\u2019s blend of traditional charm and creative energy makes it a perfect spot for a Sunday escape. Dinner is on your own: something more upscale or the classic fish and chips by the sea – just try not let the seagulls steal your chips!

Guided Tour of Canterbury Cathedral<\/h3>\n

Monday 28 July<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

At <\/span>the centre of Canterbury lies Canterbury Cathedral – one of the oldest Christian structures in England, it dominates the skyline of the surrounding countryside and forms part of a World Heritage Site. Founded in 597, the cathedral was completely rebuilt between 1070 and 1077 and served as an important pilgrimage site for pilgrims visiting the shrine of Thomas Becket, the archbishop who was murdered in the cathedral in 1170. We will have a guided tour of the Cathedral to learn more about its architecture, the meanings behind the beautiful medieval stained glass, and the history that helped make and shape the Cathedral at the heart of our city.<\/span><\/p>\n

Farewell Dinner<\/h3>\n

Wednesday 30 July<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

After the final session and a long 10 days, we\u2019ll gather for a closing drinks reception on campus, followed by a celebratory dinner at <\/span>Las Iguanas<\/span> in the city centre. We\u2019ll celebrate the things we\u2019ve learned, the friendships we\u2019ve made, and the collaborations we\u2019ll do in future. It\u2019s one last opportunity to come together, toast the Summer School, and enjoy a lively evening before parting ways (and potentially sleeping for an entire week)<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
