Tasks:

1. To produce a list of “ideal” circuit elements with a single state variable;
2. To produce a list of non ideal elements with additional state variables from popular molecular and nano-electronic devices, together with Prof. Yusuf Leblebici.

Progress:

Based on the work by Chau/Wang/etc, a list of “ideal” circuit elements with single state variable and another list of non-ideal elements with additional state variables from popular molecular and nano-electronic devices have been further investigated.

Measurable Outputs: A refined draft paper “Super-symmetry in Circuit Theory”

Tasks:

1. To compare the below two tables;
2. To study future computing paradigms with memristors with Prof. Yike Guo at Imperial College London.

Progress: 

Chau, Wang, Yike Guo and Peter Chen have compared both their quadrangular and triangular tables via frequent visits between Imperial & Kent.

In a visit to Manchester on 13/14 Febuary 2014, Steve Furber, Chau, Wang and Howard Bowman have studied nonlinear dynamics of the Hodgkin-Huxley equations. As a result, they have produced a list of “ideal” circuit elements with single molecular and nano-electronic devices.

On 28 March 2014, Chua, Wang, Ronald Tetzlaff and Fernano Corinto met in Dresden and further discussed circuit element classification and its impacts.

Measurable Outputs: A draft paper “Super-symmetry in Circuit Theory”

Tasks:

1. To review Wang/Chua’s triangular periodic table of elementary circuit elements to identify any missing links;
2. To simulate CNN with memory based on Prof Steve Furber’s Spinnaker.

Progress: 

Chau and Wang have reviewed their triangular periodic table of elementary circuit elements and identified a few missing links. They then conducted research on modelling of nano memristor devices, nonlinear dynamics and bifurcations in the Hodgkin-Huxley model, local activity principle, and edge of chaos and simulated CNN with memory based on Prof Steve Furber’s Spinnaker.

Measurable outputs:

Their work led to below publications by Wang’s PhD students:

Progress:

Chua’s quadrangular periodic table of elementary circuit elements has been studied again and memristor brain-like machine has been designed. On 16-17 September, 2013 in Turin, Italy, Chua, Wang, Fernando Corinto and Ronald Tetzlaff met and discussed memristor’s current status and future trends. On 30 September – 1 October, 2013, Chua, Wang, Tamas Roska met in Bodapest and discussed future computing paradignms and memristors.

Measurable Outputs:

Chua volunteered to assist the supervision of Wang’s PhD students on memristor-based brain-like machines, which resulted in the below publication:
