We are pleased\u00a0to announce that the University\u00a0has been awarded \u00a31.148\u202fmillion from the\u202flatest\u202fOffice\u202ffor\u202fStudents (OfS)<\/a>\u00a0Capital Funding Competition in recognition of our\u00a0commitment to\u00a0science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM)<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The funding will support the expansion of our\u00a0natural sciences (Biosciences<\/a>,\u00a0Physics & Astronomy<\/a>,\u00a0Chemistry & Forensic Science<\/a>,\u00a0Sport & Exercise Sciences<\/a>),\u00a0Engineering<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Computing<\/a>\u00a0portfolios across research and teaching.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We\u00a0will use the investment to\u202fimprove our\u00a0capacity for hybrid learning, create new high specification\u202fcomputing teaching laboratories,\u202fincrease capacity\u202ffor high performance computing use in undergraduate teaching, install a centralised render farm<\/span>\u00a0for use in our Forensic Sciences\u00a0<\/span>pro<\/span>gammes<\/span>\u00a0and invest in new natural science\u00a0<\/span>laboratory<\/span>\u00a0technology and\u00a0<\/span>facilities.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Professor Claire\u202fPeppiatt-Wildman<\/a>, Director of the Division of Natural Sciences,\u202fexplained that the investment will be\u202f\u2018transformative for our students\u202fand the wider community\u2019. She said:\u202f\u2018The equipment and infrastructure that will result from this investment will give our students the experience and confidence to succeed in the STEM sector.\u202fIt will\u202falso help\u202fus deliver the highest quality of experiential learning in skills required for the future, and\u202fplay a\u202fpivotal\u202frole in creating\u202fa pipeline of excellent graduates\u202f<\/span>with relevant\u00a0<\/span>experience of using state of the art facilities\u00a0<\/span>\u2013 all of which will benefit our region and beyond.\u2019\u202f\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

More than 150 Higher education institutions submitted bids for this year\u2019s award, with 100 receiving\u202finvestments.\u202fThe University\u2019s\u202fsuccess\u202fin this process\u202fdemonstrates its dedication to continued growth in the sciences.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Nolan Smith,\u202fDirector of\u202fResources and\u202fFinance at the\u202fOfS, said: \u2018Good facilities, modern buildings and access to the right equipment are important elements to students having a positive experience of higher education. This was a very competitive funding round, with generally high quality applications across the board. The projects we are funding provide good value for money for the taxpayer, and will make a demonstrable and positive difference to students now and into the future.
