The project is a joint venture between the University and <u><a title=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/journalism\/kmtv\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/journalism\/kmtv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">KMTV<\/a><\/u>, the local TV channel covering Kent and Medway. Supported by the BFI\u2019s <u><a title=\"https:\/\/www2.bfi.org.uk\/supporting-uk-film\/production-development-funding\/young-audiences-content-fund\" href=\"https:\/\/www2.bfi.org.uk\/supporting-uk-film\/production-development-funding\/young-audiences-content-fund\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Young Audiences Content Fund (YACF)<\/a><\/u>, this series aims to engage young people, particularly those from economically deprived and culturally diverse backgrounds, with cutting edge science, placing them at the centre of a debate about genetics and the impact it will have on their future. Each episode will focus on a particular strand of genetics and will be closely linked to the curriculum.<\/p>\n<p><b>How can you get involved?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>We are now looking for groups of Year 8 and 9 students who would like to feature in the documentary series, by being part of our audience of young people who will challenge a panel of experts on the science and issues explored in each episode.<\/p>\n<p>This will include topics such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>DNA structure and function<\/li>\n<li>Genomic medicine<\/li>\n<li>Development and evolution<\/li>\n<li>Genetics in the media \u2013 fact or fake and how to tell the difference<\/li>\n<li>The ethics of resurrecting people and species<\/li>\n<li>Genetic variation (populations and ethnic groups)<\/li>\n<li>Designer babies<\/li>\n<li>Genetics in food production<\/li>\n<li>The \u2018gay gene\u2019 and the \u2018criminal gene\u2019<\/li>\n<li>Mental health and genetics<\/li>\n<li>Academic achievement and genetics<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The filming of these debates will take place between September and November 2021.
