7 Sustainable New Year’s Resolutions to Embrace in 2025

A handful of green pledges you can make for the upcoming year

As we welcome in a new year, many of us are considering resolutions to improve our lives and the world around us. If you’re seeking ways to make a positive impact, consider adopting one or more of these seven sustainable resolutions to embrace a greener lifestyle.

1. Cycle to Work

“Exercise more” is a popular New Year’s Resolution, so why not combine it with a pledge to commute. Cycling to work is an excellent way to reduce your carbon footprint and stay active. For those studying or working at The University of Kent, there are convenient and scenic cycle paths leading to and from our Canterbury campus, with bike sheds and racks available throughout campus. Kent also has a Cycle-to-Work Scheme, which allows staff to obtain a discount on the purchase of a bicycle.

2. Adopt a more plant-based diet

If going fully vegan, either for Veganuary or as a permanent switch, isn’t possible, incorporating small changes into your diet can still make a difference. Consider participating in Meatless Mondays, only eating meat every other day, or always choosing vegan options when dining out. Not only will you be reducing your environmental impact, it could be a chance to explore a variety of new dishes and cuisines.

3. Go ‘Zero Waste’

Take on the challenge of living a year with as little waste as possible. There are many ways to reduce your waste; shop at local refill stores like The Refillery, or farm shops like The Goods Shed, both in Canterbury City Centre; opt for package-free toiletries and cleaning products, start a compost bin to give back to the earth directly, go paperless for receipts and documents, and/or aim to repair items where possible instead of replacing them. Collect any waste products you can’t reuse or compost to track your progress throughout the year.

4. Grow your own produce

Start a small vegetable patch or window box garden to cultivate your own fresh produce. You can even regrow vegetables like spring onions and peppers using scraps from your kitchen, minimising food waste while enjoying the fruits (and vegetables!) of your labour.

5. ‘Nothing New’

Pledge to purchase all new clothes, furniture and equipment exclusively from secondhand sources. Not only will you be reducing waste and supporting local charities, but you might also discover one-of-a-kind items that add character to your home and wardrobe.

6. Get out in nature

Strengthening your connection with nature can inspire a greater commitment to conservation efforts. Consider purchasing a membership to a local nature preservation organisation or wildlife charity and participating in regular walks and tours. You’ll be supporting their work while enjoying the mental health benefits of spending time outdoors.

7. Take cold showers

Cold showers not only offer various health benefits, but they also reduce energy consumption. Start your day off with a homemade Wim Hof experience, by turning down the temperature and making your morning more sustainable.

By adopting even a couple of these sustainable practices, we can collectively work towards a greener and healthier future for our planet. Good luck on your resolutions and have a wonderful 2025!
