Remembering Elva: Advocate, Leader and DICE Alumna

We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Elva Gemita, an alumna of our MSc in Conservation Project Management in 2015-16.

Elva was a tireless advocate for wildlife conservation in Sumatra, leaving an indelible mark on the field and all who knew her.

Her early work in Indonesia involved conservation and development projects around Kerinci-Seblat National Park where DICE supported tiger monitoring. She went on to lead biodiversity monitoring and patrol teams for a major palm oil company and later became a pivotal figure at the Harapan Forest Restoration project. As Manager for Environment, Research, and Development, she ensured biodiversity was central to restoration efforts, inspiring a new generation of conservationists.

Elva’s passion for protecting Indonesia’s tigers and forests was resolute, her enthusiasm infectious even in the most challenging conditions. She was not only a brilliant conservationist, but also a kind and inspiring colleague whose legacy will continue to inspire.

Our heartfelt condolences go to Elva’s family and friends across Indonesia. Her dedication to conservation and unwavering spirit will never be forgotten.
