{"id":987,"date":"2015-01-16T11:00:29","date_gmt":"2015-01-16T11:00:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/development\/?p=987"},"modified":"2015-01-16T11:09:19","modified_gmt":"2015-01-16T11:09:19","slug":"school-of-computings-placement-team-is-an-example-of-best-practice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/development\/2015\/01\/16\/school-of-computings-placement-team-is-an-example-of-best-practice\/","title":{"rendered":"School of Computing\u2019s placement team is an example of best practice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A national report on industry placements has used Kent\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.kent.ac.uk\/index.html\">School of Computing<\/a>\u2019s Placement Office as an example of best practice.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Growing Experience: A Review of Undergraduate Placements in Computer Science\u2019 was published in January by the National Centre for Universities and Businesses, and\u00a0highlighted the \u2018organic growth\u2019 model which is part of the Kent placement team strategy.<\/p>\n<p>The report\u2019s authors said: \u2018We surveyed 40 Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) across the UK about the quality and quantity of current computing placement activity, and explored in depth their views, working practices and their perception of the barriers to student uptake.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The report investigated the relatively high level of unemployment for computer sciences graduates nationally, despite rapid growth in the technology sector.\u00a0However this trend does not apply to all computer science graduates from Kent, particularly those with a Year in Industry placement.\u00a0The results of the last National Student Survey showed that 100% of Kent Computer Science with a Year in Industry graduates <a href=\"http:\/\/unistats.direct.gov.uk\/Subjects\/Overview\/10007150FT-COMPSCI-S_BSC_G404\/ReturnTo\/Search\">were employed in a professional or managerial role<\/a> within six months of graduation.<\/p>\n<p>Katie Van Sanden, one of the School\u2019s two Placement Officers, said: \u2018We pride ourselves on being a dedicated <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.kent.ac.uk\/placements\/index.html\">Placement Office<\/a> whose sole purpose is to find suitable year-long placements to complement the theory taught on the course.
