{"id":937,"date":"2014-12-08T15:27:12","date_gmt":"2014-12-08T15:27:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/development\/?p=937"},"modified":"2015-04-27T11:11:55","modified_gmt":"2015-04-27T10:11:55","slug":"sporting-legends-at-university-event","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/development\/2014\/12\/08\/sporting-legends-at-university-event\/","title":{"rendered":"Sporting legends at University event"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Sporting legends assembled at the University\u2019s sports centre for a special gala evening to celebrate sporting achievement across the county.<\/p>\n<p>The event, which took place on 5 December 2014 at the University\u2019s <a title=\"Location webpage\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/locations\/canterbury\">Canterbury campus<\/a> sports centre, welcomed Kent sport stars to celebrate their past and present successes, and their future sporting aspirations.<\/p>\n<p>Founded by the University\u2019s Kent Sport Director Graham Holmes, it was organised by Kent Sport in partnership with Kent County Council Sport and Physical Activity Service (KCC). It was hosted by Kent alumnus and county cricketer, David Fulton, and also featured a number of sporting legends from the region including (among many others): England cricketer and Ashes winner, Geraint Jones MBE; Maidstone-born GB decathlete, Martin Brockman; Canterbury\u2019s England women\u2019s rugby player, Amy Garnett; and Sochi winter Olympics GB bobsleigh team member, David Coleman.<\/p>\n<p>The University\u2019s own <a title=\"Sport scholarship pages\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/sports\/scholarships\/currentscholars.html\">sport scholars<\/a> also attended the event. Many of these scholars have gone on to represent GB, such as karate champion Jasmine Pomeroy, and hockey player and Rio Olympics 2016-hopeful Susannah Townsend. Future stars from across the county, including athletes Bobby and Alex Clay, and Paralympian skier Millie Knight, were also present.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/unikent50\/15406171224\/in\/set-72157649765626181\/player\/\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The event is part of the University\u2019s <a title=\"50th anniversary webpages\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/50\">50th anniversary<\/a> celebrations, and also helped launch a special fundraising initiative called Project 100 which will contribute to future sporting projects for Kent students.<\/p>\n<p>The evening\u2019s entertainment featured live music from double MOBO Award-winning saxophonist and Kent alumnus <a title=\"Yolanda Brown webpage\" href=\"http:\/\/www.yolandabrown.co.uk\/\">YolanDa Brown <i class=\"fa fa-external-link\"><\/i><\/a> and a performance from the <a title=\"Jasmin Vardimon webpage\" href=\"http:\/\/jasminvardimon.com\/about-us\/jasmin-vardimon-company\/\">Jasmin Vardimon Dance Company. <i class=\"fa fa-external-link\"><\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s gala evening follows the first Kent\u2019s Sporting Legends event held in 2012, also jointly hosted by the University and KCC. It is hoped the event will run biennially due to its increasing success.<\/p>\n<p>A special publication highlighting the achievements of Kent\u2019s Sporting Legends has been produced.
