They will take place in Grimond Lecture Theatre 1 at 6pm on the University\u2019s Canterbury campus and are free and open to all.<\/p>\n<p>Vice-Chancellor Professor Dame Julia Goodfellow said: \u2018I am delighted to announce this series of inspiring open lectures by Kent staff in our 50<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary year. They feature a range of specialties, reflecting the University\u2019s broad academic appeal, and provide a wonderful opportunity to hear from academics who are internationally renowned in the sciences, technology, medical studies, the social sciences, arts and humanities.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Confirmed lectures include:<\/p>\n<p>Wednesday 3 December \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/history\/staff\/profiles\/connelly.html\">Mark Connelly<\/a>, Professor of Modern British History, \u2018Not so Silent Nights: Myths and Realities of Christmas 1914\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Wednesday 4 February \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/politics\/about-us\/staff\/members\/blakeley.html\">Dr Ruth Blakeley<\/a>, Reader in International Relations, \u2018Mapping the Global System of Rendition, Secret Detention and Torture in the War on Terror\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Wednesday 11 February \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/english\/staff\/gurnah.html\">Abdulrazak Gurnah<\/a>, Professor of English and Postcolonial Literatures, \u2018Indian Ocean Journeys\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Wednesday 4 March \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/sspssr\/staff\/academic\/twigg.html\">Julia Twigg<\/a>, Professor of Social Policy and Sociology, \u2018Fashion and Age: Dress, the Body and Later Life\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Wednesday 11 March \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/bio\/profiles\/staff\/warren.html\">Martin Warren<\/a>, Professor of Biochemistry, \u2018Royal Diseases: Medical Mysteries of Queen Victoria\u2019s Haemophilia and King George III\u2019s Madness\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Wednesday 25 March \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/psychology\/people\/abramsd\/\">Dominic Abrams<\/a>, Professor of Social Policy on \u2018The Pride and Prejudice of Groups and their Leaders; Must \u2018The Dark Side\u2019 Prevail in Politics, Organisations and Society\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Wednesday 1 April \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/physical-sciences\/staff\/profiles\/robert-green.html\">Robert Green OBE<\/a>, Senior Lecturer in Forensic Science, \u2018DNA and Crime \u2013 Fact, Fable and Future\u2019.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; A series of prestigious public lectures by Kent academics is being held to mark the University\u2019s 50th anniversary during 2014\/15.
