{"id":4378,"date":"2024-02-21T12:14:32","date_gmt":"2024-02-21T12:14:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/development\/?p=4378"},"modified":"2024-02-21T12:14:40","modified_gmt":"2024-02-21T12:14:40","slug":"yolanda-brown-brings-reggae-jazz-and-soul-to-kent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/development\/2024\/02\/21\/yolanda-brown-brings-reggae-jazz-and-soul-to-kent\/","title":{"rendered":"YolanDa Brown, brings reggae, jazz, and soul to Kent"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The critically-acclaimed, double MOBO Award winning Saxophonist &#8211; and Kent alumna &#8211; will return to Canterbury for two exciting events at Gulbenkian on Saturday 9 March.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Beginning in the afternoon with a live stage performance of <a href=\"https:\/\/thegulbenkian.co.uk\/events\/yolandas-band-jam\/\">YolanDa\u2019s Band Jam<\/a>, the popular CBeebies children\u2019s TV series dubbed \u2018Jools Holland for kids\u2019. The show encourages children to discover the joys of music through dancing, singing and playing. It recently won \u2018Best Children\u2019s Programme (Pre-school)\u2019 at the Royal Television Society NW Awards and YolanDa was nominated for a BAFTA in the Best Presenter Category.<\/p>\n<p>This will be followed by <a href=\"https:\/\/thegulbenkian.co.uk\/events\/yolanda-brown\/\">an evening performance<\/a> where YolanDa can showcase her delicious fusion of reggae, jazz, and soul.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thegulbenkian.co.uk\/whats-on\/?numPosts=15&amp;pageNumber=&amp;event_type=&amp;event_category=live-events&amp;event_access=&amp;searchEvents=&amp;start_date=&amp;end_date=&amp;action=whatson_loop_handler\">Make sure to book your tickets now!<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/development\/files\/2024\/02\/YolanDasBandJam_S01_All_IconStill_14.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4381\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/development\/files\/2024\/02\/YolanDasBandJam_S01_All_IconStill_14.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1952\" height=\"1292\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>About YolanDa<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Following her graduation from Kent, YolanDa has toured with The Temptations, Jools Holland\u2019s Rhythm and Blues Orchestra, Billy Ocean and collaborated with Dave Stewart from Eurythmics, Snarky Puppy\u2019s Bill Laurance, Kelly Jones from Stereophonics and Rick Astley. She is currently composing music for the iconic Sesame Street, animated series called Bea\u2019s Block on Sky Kids, as well as the Netflix Series CocoMelon Lane.<\/p>\n<p>She was awarded an OBE for services to music, music education and broadcasting in the 2023 New Year Honours List by his Majesty the King. In July 2022, YolanDa was appointed Chair of BPI (BRIT Awards, Mercury Prize). A champion for the importance of music education, YolanDa is Chair of Youth Music, sits on the Arts Council National Council, is a trustee of the PRS Foundation, an ambassador for the Prince\u2019s Trust, on English Heritage\u2019s Blue Plaque panel and sits on the advisory board of the London Philharmonic Orchestra.<\/p>\n<p>As a broadcaster, her eponymous series for CBeebies, \u201cYolanDa\u2019s Band Jam\u201d, won the RTSNW award as Best Children\u2019s Programme. For the BBC Proms she hosted the Ella and Dizzy Centenary, BBC Gospel Choir of the Year and Young Jazz Musician of the year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/development\/files\/2024\/02\/e1640bb9fce72dd9324b1cc7bc59bc65f362bbe6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4382\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/development\/files\/2024\/02\/e1640bb9fce72dd9324b1cc7bc59bc65f362bbe6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"780\" height=\"585\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On radio, she hosts YolanDa Brown on Saturday on Jazz FM, presents the best of classical music on Scala Radio on Sundays, and can be heard across BBC Radio 2 and Magic FM.<\/p>\n<p>You may have also spotted her flexing her general knowledge muscles on such shows as: \u2018Bridge of Lies\u2019 with Ross Kemp, \u2018The Hit List\u2019, \u2018House of Games\u2019, \u2018Celebrity Mastermind\u2019, \u2018Pointless Celebrities\u2019 which she won.
