{"id":4207,"date":"2023-11-06T09:42:50","date_gmt":"2023-11-06T09:42:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/development\/?p=4207"},"modified":"2023-11-15T16:08:32","modified_gmt":"2023-11-15T16:08:32","slug":"horticultural-therapy-planned-for-pcit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/development\/2023\/11\/06\/horticultural-therapy-planned-for-pcit\/","title":{"rendered":"Horticultural Therapy Planned for PCIT"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-sourcepos=\"1:1-1:172\">Horticultural therapy is an effective and complementary treatment for people with Parkinson&#8217;s disease which offers a range of physical, cognitive and emotional benefits.\u00a0 The Team at the Parkinson&#8217;s Centre for Integrated Therapy are currently running a fundraising campaign to seek the necessary funding to offer this important therapy at the Centre.<\/p>\n<p>Gardening provides a form of moderate-intensity exercise which is important for people with Parkinson&#8217;s to maintain muscle strength, flexibility and balance.\u00a0 It also helps to improve fine motor skills and coordination.\u00a0 The social aspect of this therapy is also beneficial and will help boost mood and self-esteem.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to members of Canterbury City Council, who have supported this project through the Opportunities Fund Scheme, we have raised \u00a32,200 towards our \u00a33,000 target to date and hope to launch this new therapy in the coming months.\u00a0 We are delighted to be working with Cllr Dane Buckman on the designs for this new allotment garden and we look forward to sharing further details with you in due course.<\/p>\n<p>Cllr Dan Watkins, Councillor for Greenhill Ward, who has supported this project said: &#8216;I&#8217;m delighted to give an Opportunities Fund grant to the Parkinson&#8217;s Centre to help it set up a horticultural therapy programme. We have many residents across the district who are living with Parkinson&#8217;s and don&#8217;t have access to a home garden or allotment. By establishing this facility, these residents will really benefit from the activity of growing vegetables, socialising with others facing the same challenges and getting exercise in the fresh air.
