Alumnus Henry Dubroff, founder and editor of the Pacific Coast Business Times, has been awarded the President’s Award by the Society for Advancing Business Editing and Writing (SABEW).<\/p>\n
SABEW is based at The Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communications at Arizona State University in Phoenix and is the world’s largest organization for business journalists with representatives from Bloomberg, Dow Jones, the FT, Reuters, Associated\u00a0 Press, NYTimes, Washington Post and many local\/regional publications.<\/p>\n
Henry had this to say about the award:<\/p>\n
“In 2017, recognizing the threats to the free press presented by the Trump\u00a0 Administration – but also recognizing that prior administrations have been narrowing press access to government documents under the Freedom of Information Act –\u00a0 SABEW launched a First Amendment Committee. As a former SABEW president and independent news organization owner I was asked to join.<\/p>\n
“I became chair in 2018 and expanded the committee and worked on a series of statements about government transparency, actions against our member staff in the US and abroad and other issues affecting the financial press. I’m proud of how the First Amendment Committee became a way for SABEW to connect with its far-flung members during the pandemic. I would give a shout out to our Executive Director Kathleen Graham and to committee vice chair J.T. Madore, a staff writer for Newsday on Long Island for guidance and deft editing.”<\/p>\n
