{"id":2623,"date":"2020-04-16T11:17:52","date_gmt":"2020-04-16T10:17:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/development\/?p=2623"},"modified":"2020-04-16T13:52:42","modified_gmt":"2020-04-16T12:52:42","slug":"garfield-weston-foundation-donates-500k-to-new-kent-and-medway-medical-school","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/development\/2020\/04\/16\/garfield-weston-foundation-donates-500k-to-new-kent-and-medway-medical-school\/","title":{"rendered":"Garfield Weston Foundation donates \u00a3500k to new Kent and Medway Medical School"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"lead\">A \u00a3500,000 gift from the Garfield Weston Foundation will support the construction of the new Kent and Medway Medical School (KMMS), a collaboration between the University of Kent and Canterbury Christ Church University.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/development\/files\/2020\/04\/Garfield-Weston.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2624\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/development\/files\/2020\/04\/Garfield-Weston.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"252\" height=\"175\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To acknowledge this generous gift the GP Simulation Suite, housed in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/news\/kentlife\/23838\/topping-out-for-new-medical-school-building\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">new KMMS building<\/a>\u00a0on the University of Kent\u2019s Canterbury campus, will be named the\u00a0<strong>Weston GP Simulation Suite<\/strong><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kmms.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">KMMS<\/a>\u00a0will\u00a0<strong>open in September 2020<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Established in 1958, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/garfieldweston.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Garfield Weston Foundation<\/a>\u00a0is a family-founded\u00a0<strong>charitable grant-making trust<\/strong>\u00a0which now gives away approximately \u00a380 million a year to charities across the UK. Since it was established it has\u00a0<strong>donated over \u00a31 billion<\/strong>, of which over half has been given away in the past ten years alone. In the most recent financial year the Foundation gave away over \u00a379 million to over\u00a0<strong>2,100 charities<\/strong>\u00a0across the UK.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Professor Karen Cox<\/strong>, Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Kent, said: \u2018We would like to thank the Garfield Weston Foundation for their\u00a0<strong>very generous donation and support<\/strong>\u00a0of the Kent and Medway Medical School. Their donation will help us provide a\u00a0<strong>world-class facility for our students<\/strong>; one that will ensure they receive the\u00a0<strong>best possible training<\/strong>\u00a0for their careers in the medical profession.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><strong>Philippa Charles<\/strong>, Director of the Garfield Weston Foundation said: \u2018Our Trustees are delighted to support the Kent and Medway Medical School in establishing a\u00a0<strong>much-needed new Medical School for the region<\/strong>.\u00a0The Weston GP Simulation Suite will provide general practice simulation training where trainees will\u00a0<strong>learn, practise and improve their clinical skills<\/strong>\u00a0during their five-year BM BS programme.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><strong>Professor Chris Holland<\/strong>, Dean of the Kent and Medway Medical School, added: \u2018The Weston GP Simulation Suite will contain two GP consulting rooms and a reception area. This will\u00a0<strong>allow our students to learn the expert consultation and communication skills used in General Practice<\/strong>\u00a0in a safe and simulated environment before going into clinical practice. The suite will also be\u00a0<strong>available for post-graduate trainees in General Practice<\/strong>\u00a0to further their post-graduate training and qualifications. We are extremely grateful to the Garfield Weston Foundation for helping make this possible.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>When complete, KMMS will be the\u00a0<strong>first medical school in Kent and Medway<\/strong>, providing a centre in the region for\u00a0medical education and research\u00a0to develop the area\u2019s health workforce, and address the\u00a0<strong>growing need for medical professionals in the area<\/strong>\u00a0due to rapid housing and population growth.<\/p>\n<p>KMMS will offer\u00a0<strong>first-class medical education and research<\/strong>, combining the existing high-quality clinical teaching and research strengths of the two universities. From 2020, it will offer a five-year\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/kmms.ac.uk\/study\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (BM BS)<\/a>\u00a0degree with\u00a0<strong>medical placements<\/strong>\u00a0in Primary, Community, Mental Health and Secondary Care settings across Kent and Medway.
