Pears Foundation has donated \u00a32 million to the Kent and Medway Medical School (KMMS), a collaboration between the University of Kent and Canterbury Christ Church University.<\/p>\n

\"Pears<\/a><\/p>\n

To acknowledge such a\u00a0transformative gift<\/strong>\u00a0a new\u00a0Medical School building<\/a>\u00a0on Kent\u2019s\u00a0Canterbury campus<\/strong>\u00a0will be named the\u00a0Pears Building<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Due to open in\u00a0July 2020<\/strong>, the Pears Building will provide medical students with an\u00a0inspirational learning and study environment<\/strong>\u00a0containing a 150-seat lecture theatre, seminar rooms, IT suites, social spaces and a\u00a0GP simulation suite \u2013 the first in the UK<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Professor Karen Cox<\/a>, Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Kent, said: \u2018We are\u00a0extremely grateful<\/strong>\u00a0for this generous gift from Pears Foundation. It will help\u00a0transform<\/strong>\u00a0health provision in the region, and ensure that we provide our students with the\u00a0best facilities<\/strong>\u00a0in which to train, study and\u00a0become the medical practitioners they aspire to be<\/strong>.\u2019<\/p>\n

Sir Trevor Pears<\/a>, Executive Chair,\u00a0Pears Foundation<\/a>, said: \u2018My brothers and I are\u00a0delighted to support<\/strong>\u00a0the new Kent and Medway Medical School. Our family foundation has a\u00a0long-standing relationship<\/strong>\u00a0with the University of Kent and we are confident this new collaboration will make a\u00a0significant contribution to health provision<\/strong>\u00a0regionally and nationally.\u2019<\/p>\n

Professor Chris Holland<\/a>, Dean of the\u00a0Kent and Medway Medical School<\/a>, added: \u2018This wonderful donation from Pears Foundation will have a\u00a0huge impact<\/strong>\u00a0on helping KMMS deliver our ambitions to\u00a0address healthcare inequalities<\/strong>\u00a0in Kent and Medway. We look forward to working with our\u00a0students and the wider community<\/strong>\u00a0in the Pears Building at the University of Kent.\u2019<\/p>\n

When complete, KMMS will be the\u00a0first medical school<\/strong>\u00a0in Kent and Medway, providing a centre in the region for\u00a0medical education and research<\/strong>\u00a0to develop the area\u2019s health workforce, and\u00a0address the growing need<\/strong>\u00a0for medical professionals in the area due to rapid housing and population growth.<\/p>\n

KMMS will offer\u00a0first-class<\/strong>\u00a0medical education and research,\u00a0combining<\/strong>\u00a0the existing high-quality clinical\u00a0teaching and research strengths<\/strong>\u00a0of the two universities.<\/p>\n

From 2020, it will offer a five-year\u00a0Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (BM BS)<\/a>\u00a0degree with\u00a0medical placements<\/strong>\u00a0in Primary, Community, Mental Health and Secondary Care settings across Kent and Medway.<\/p>\n

Based at the universities\u2019 Canterbury campuses, Kent and Medway\u2018s first medical school aims to be\u00a0first choice<\/strong>\u00a0for all those aspiring to achieve\u00a0excellence<\/strong>\u00a0in person-centred medical care in the UK.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
