{"id":1724,"date":"2016-03-17T14:45:31","date_gmt":"2016-03-17T14:45:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/development\/?p=1724"},"modified":"2016-03-18T17:05:33","modified_gmt":"2016-03-18T17:05:33","slug":"alumna-amanda-thomas-book-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/development\/2016\/03\/17\/alumna-amanda-thomas-book-competition\/","title":{"rendered":"Alumna Amanda Thomas book competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Following on from\u00a0their &#8216;Working in Publishing&#8217; Humanities for Hire event,\u00a0the School of European Culture and Languages (SECL)\u00a0have a copy of Amanda Thomas&#8217; recent book <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pen-and-sword.co.uk\/Cholera-Hardback\/p\/10951\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc\">Cholera: The Victorian Plague<\/span><\/a> <\/em>(Pen and Sword Books, 2015) to give away.<\/p>\n<p>Amanda Thomas is a SECL alumna, graduating in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/modern-languages\/undergraduate\/italian\/italian.html\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc\">Italian<\/span><\/a>. Her diverse career has seen her work in journalism, and public relations for television companies including The Walt Disney Company and Television New Zealand. She is currently an author, historian and linguist.<\/p>\n<p><em>Cholera: The Victorian Plague<\/em>\u00a0tells the story of the disease that devastated the Victorian population, and brought about major changes in sanitation. Drawing on the latest scientific research and a wealth of archival material, Amanda\u00a0uses first-hand accounts, blending personal stories with an overview of the history of the disease and its devastating after-effects on British society. The book reveals that Victorian theories about the disease were often closer to the truth than we might assume.<\/p>\n<p>To win a copy of the book, signed by Amanda, you will need to answer the following question: in what country is cholera thought to have originated?<\/p>\n<p>The deadline for entry is <strong>Friday 8 April 2016<\/strong>. Please email your answer to <a href=\"mailto:secl@kent.ac.uk\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc\">secl@kent.ac.uk<\/span><\/a> with &#8216;SECL Publishing Competition&#8217; as the title of the email or message us via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/unikentsecl\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc\">Facebook<\/span><\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/unikentsecl\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc\">Twitter<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Approximately 120 students attended the &#8216;Working in Publishing&#8217; event, which featured Amanda presenting alongside <a href=\"http:\/\/www.doctorwhomagazine.com\/\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc\"><em>Doctor Who Magazine<\/em><\/span><\/a> editorial assistant and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/ell\/index.html\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc\">English Language &amp; Linguistics<\/span><\/a> alumna Emily Cook, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.routledge.com\/\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc\">Routledge<\/span><\/a> editorial director Craig Fowlie, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.publishers.org.uk\/\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc\">Publishers Association<\/span><\/a> campaigns manager Seonaid Macleod, about their careers in the world of publishing.
