{"id":1342,"date":"2015-06-15T15:18:48","date_gmt":"2015-06-15T14:18:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/development\/?p=1342"},"modified":"2015-06-19T15:21:45","modified_gmt":"2015-06-19T14:21:45","slug":"university-is-worth-0-7-billion-to-the-local-economy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/development\/2015\/06\/15\/university-is-worth-0-7-billion-to-the-local-economy\/","title":{"rendered":"University is worth \u00a30.7 billion to the local economy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A new report reaffirms the University\u2019s role as a major economic, cultural and social force in the region and the positive contribution of its students.<\/p>\n<p>In 2014, the University commissioned an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/impact\/\">economic impact study<\/a> for the financial year 2012\/13.<\/p>\n<p>Among the key findings, the report shows that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The University is worth \u00a30.7 billion to the economy of the south east and directly or indirectly supports just over 7,800 jobs in the region<\/li>\n<li>it generates over \u00a3520 million per year for the Canterbury area and over ten per cent of all Canterbury jobs<\/li>\n<li>it generates over \u00a380 million per year in the Medway area and 830 full-time local jobs<\/li>\n<li>its student off-campus spend in the region is estimated to be almost \u00a3250 million, generating \u00a3283 million for the region and creating 2,532 full-time equivalent jobs<\/li>\n<li>the estimated off-campus expenditure of its international students from over 140 countries was \u00a360.3 million<\/li>\n<li>the University\u2019s total export earnings are \u00a3111.9 million, making an important contribution to the UK balance of trade<\/li>\n<li>the University is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/conferences\/\">largest conference venue<\/a> in the south east, handling more than 2,000 residential events and 145,000 overnight stays<\/li>\n<li>during 2013 alone, 97,786 visitors attended events at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thegulbenkian.co.uk\/\">Gulbenkian <i class=\"fa fa-external-link\"><\/i><\/a> and Colyer-Fergusson Music Building.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The report, produced by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.viewforthconsulting.co.uk\/\">Viewforth Consulting <i class=\"fa fa-external-link\"><\/i><\/a>, also shows that the University\u2019s students delivered a total of 104,868 volunteering hours in 2013\/14 with an estimated economic value of between \u00a3527,000 and \u00a3640,000, benefitting more than 50 local organisations. 16,000\u00a0of those hours were delivered by Medway students.<\/p>\n<p>In collaboration with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.canterbury.ac.uk\/\">Canterbury Christ Church University <i class=\"fa fa-external-link\"><\/i><\/a>, the University\u00a0also commissioned a report on the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/jointimpact\">joint impact of the two universities <i class=\"fa fa-external-link\"><\/i><\/a> on the region.<\/p>\n<p>A report commissioned by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.universitiesuk.ac.uk\/\">Universities UK <i class=\"fa fa-external-link\"><\/i><\/a>\u00a0on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.universitiesuk.ac.uk\/highereducation\/Pages\/TheEconomicRoleofUKUniversities.aspx\">economic role of UK universities <i class=\"fa fa-external-link\"><\/i><\/a> is also available.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;
