{"id":1262,"date":"2015-05-07T14:42:28","date_gmt":"2015-05-07T13:42:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/development\/?p=1262"},"modified":"2015-05-13T14:47:20","modified_gmt":"2015-05-13T13:47:20","slug":"major-exhibition-celebrates-1960s-art","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/development\/2015\/05\/07\/major-exhibition-celebrates-1960s-art\/","title":{"rendered":"Major exhibition celebrates 1960s art"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left\"><strong class=\"lead\">A 50th anniversary exhibition titled \u2018My Generation: a Festival of British Art in the 1960s\u2019 celebrates the creativity of the 1960s.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This innovative exhibition series looks back at the art created by younger artists during those heady, \u2018swinging\u2019 times when the University of Kent was established.<\/p>\n<p>The three-part exhibition is taking place at galleries across Kent over seven months. It is the brainchild of <a title=\"Martin Hammer staff profile\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/arts\/staff-profiles\/profiles\/HPA\/hammer.html\">Martin Hammer<\/a>, Professor of Art History at the University, who wrote the accompanying catalogue and, with others, is presenting talks at each of the galleries.<\/p>\n<p>The latest exhibition, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.canterbury.co.uk\/Beaney\/whats_on\/Home-And-Away.aspx\">Home and Away: Eduardo Paolozzi\u2019s <em>General Dynamic F.U.N. <\/em>and photographs of S.E. England by Tony Ray-Jones <i class=\"fa fa-external-link\"><\/i><\/a> opens at the Beaney House of Art and Knowledge (Canterbury city centre) on 9 May and runs until 23 August 2015.<\/p>\n<p>As well as work by these two key artists, the Beaney exhibition features a range of items from the 1960s, including ceramics and rare covers of records by The Who.\u00a0 \u2018My Generation\u2019 was one of the band\u2019s ground-breaking recordings and appeared in 1965, the same year as the University of Kent opened.<\/p>\n<p>Other exhibitions in the series include \u2018Palindrome: The Sixties Art of Brian Rice and Richard Rome\u2019 at the Studio 3 Gallery (on the University\u2019s Canterbury campus) from 19 January-10 April 2015 and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mascallsgallery.org\/\">\u2018A Marriage of Styles: Pop to Abstraction\u2019 <i class=\"fa fa-external-link\"><\/i><\/a>, featuring major paintings by, for example, David Hockney, Bridget Riley and Allen Jones, at the Mascalls Gallery, Paddock Wood until 6 June 2015.<\/p>\n<p>For more information on the exhibition series, contact Katie McGown, Studio 3 Gallery Coordinator \u2013 email\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:k.m.mcgown@kent.ac.uk\"><i class=\"fa fa-envelope-o\"><\/i> k.m.mcgown@kent.ac.uk<\/a> or phone 01227 823 448.<\/p>\n<p>To find out more about how\u00a0the University of Kent is marking its 50<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary, see:<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/50\">http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/50<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A 50th anniversary exhibition titled \u2018My Generation: a Festival of British Art in the 1960s\u2019 celebrates the creativity of the 1960s.
