{"id":1237,"date":"2015-05-11T13:02:53","date_gmt":"2015-05-11T12:02:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/development\/?p=1237"},"modified":"2015-05-13T14:30:28","modified_gmt":"2015-05-13T13:30:28","slug":"kent-student-award-winners-announced-at-gala-ceremony","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/development\/2015\/05\/11\/kent-student-award-winners-announced-at-gala-ceremony\/","title":{"rendered":"Kent Student Award winners announced at gala ceremony"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong class=\"lead\">Annual event celebrates those who have made an outstanding contribution to University life or a positive impact on the community.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The winners of Kent\u2019s annual awards for students who have made an outstanding contribution to University life or a positive impact on the community were announced during a gala ceremony on Friday 8 May.<\/p>\n<p>Held at Darwin College on the University\u2019s Canterbury campus, the Kent Student Awards 2015 were attended by more than 140 students, staff and guests.<\/p>\n<p>The overall <strong>Student of the Year Award<\/strong> was won by April-Louise Pennant, a final year<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/courses\/undergraduate\/247\/sociology-with-a-year-in-hong-kong\">Sociology with a Year in Hong Kong <\/a>student. She received her Award from Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Keith Mander and Tammy Naidoo, President of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kentunion.co.uk\/\">Kent Union <i class=\"fa fa-external-link\"><\/i><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Pennant was chosen having won the <strong>Outstanding International\/Multicultural Initiative of the Year<\/strong> and for being a runner up in the Outstanding Contribution to Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity category. Her achievements include promoting racial equality and black culture on campus and at The Chinese University of Hong Kong.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/development\/files\/2015\/05\/DSC_1863-e1431338272887-1024x683.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1238\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/development\/files\/2015\/05\/DSC_1863-e1431338272887-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Billy Yu Lok Ng\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/development\/files\/2015\/05\/DSC_1863-e1431338272887-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/development\/files\/2015\/05\/DSC_1863-e1431338272887-1024x683-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/development\/files\/2015\/05\/DSC_1863-e1431338272887-1024x683-624x416.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Kent Law School student Billy Yu Lok Ng won both the<strong> Chancellor\u2019s Employability Points Award<\/strong> and the <strong>Outstanding Fundraiser of the Year Award<\/strong> for his campaigning and fundraising for a new Kent Law Clinic on campus, \u00a0alongside\u00a0other charity fundraising.<\/p>\n<p>The other <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/student\/kentawards\/winners\/index.html\">Awards categories and winners<\/a> were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Outstanding Contribution to the 50th Anniversary<\/strong> \u2013 Campus2Campus runners, for running over 200 miles from Canterbury to Paris and raising over \u00a36,000 for charity in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/50\/\">University\u2019s 50th year<\/a>. The runners included: George Brodie, Jessica Houghton, Cameron Hutton, Ellie Mason, Matthew Prior and Anh Tran<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Outstanding Contribution to the Local Community<\/strong> \u2013 Gullalaii Yousafzai, a postgraduate student in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/courses\/postgraduate\/228\/reproductive-medicine-science-and-ethics\">Reproductive Medicine: Science and Ethics<\/a>, for helping the homeless, volunteering as an English teacher, raising awareness of hate crime and supporting asylum seekers through being a birth partner<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Outstanding Student Entrepreneur of the Year<\/strong> \u2013 Oluwafunmilayo Taiwo,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/courses\/undergraduate\/179\/computing-and-business-administration-with-a-year-in-industry\">Computing and Business Administration with a Year in Industry<\/a>, for establishing a successful student cleaning business alongside her studies and helping to motivate and inspire fellow student entrepreneurs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Outstanding Contribution to Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity<\/strong> \u2013 Sebastian Bromelow, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/politics\/postgraduates\/taught-programmes\/macompol.html\">Research Masters in Comparative Politics<\/a>, for single-handedly transforming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/student\/news\/?id=1657\">LGBT History Month<\/a> at the University and making it the largest in the UK<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Outstanding Contribution to Arts and Culture<\/strong> \u2013 Daniel Hards, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/arts\/drama\/\">Drama and Theatre<\/a>, for establishing a theatre company, volunteering and for developing the confidence and creativity of local school children through youth theatre<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Outstanding Environmental Champion<\/strong> \u2013 Fiona Pedeboy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/politics\/\">Politics and International Relations<\/a>, for promoting sustainable practices on campus and setting-up a free shop where students can donate unwanted items for reuse by others<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Outstanding Contribution to Media and Communications<\/strong> \u2013 Rachel Cribbin<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/courses\/undergraduate\/138\/english-and-american-literature-with-an-approved-year-abroad\">, English &amp; American Literature with an Approved Year Abroad<\/a>, for successfully re-inventing the student radio\u2019s (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.csrfm.com\/\">CSRfm <i class=\"fa fa-external-link\"><\/i><\/a>) Youth Academy, which provides free media training to young adults<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Outstanding Contribution to College Life<\/strong> \u2013 Miruna Beldiman, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/kbs\/undergraduate\/programmes\/ug-business-yr-industry.html\">Business Studies with a Year in Industry<\/a> (final year) at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/kbs\/school\/medway.html\">Kent Business School (Medway)<\/a>, for her extensive volunteer work and for developing volunteering opportunities for students on the Medway campus<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Outstanding Contribution to Sport Development<\/strong> \u2013 Sam Lee, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/physical-sciences\/prospective\/undergraduate\/space-science\/\">Astronomy, Space Science &amp; Astrophysics<\/a>, for his dedication to the Caving Society<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Two <strong>Special Commendations for Overcoming Personal Challenges<\/strong> were awarded to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dellanie Nash, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/philosophy\/postgraduate\/taught-medical-humanities.html\">Medical Humanities<\/a>, for inspiring fellow students through her dedication and high level of academic achievement, while working full-time to support her family<\/li>\n<li>Hannah Beth Ford, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/psychology\/\">Psychology<\/a>, for her desire to set up a charity to help others after overcoming her own personal difficulties.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Annual event celebrates those who have made an outstanding contribution to University life or a positive impact on the community.
