{"id":1220,"date":"2015-05-01T14:15:45","date_gmt":"2015-05-01T13:15:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/development\/?p=1220"},"modified":"2015-05-01T14:19:50","modified_gmt":"2015-05-01T13:19:50","slug":"kents-innovation-in-academia-winners-announced-in-la","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/development\/2015\/05\/01\/kents-innovation-in-academia-winners-announced-in-la\/","title":{"rendered":"Kent&#8217;s Innovation in Academia winners announced in LA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dr Paul Thompson from the University of Southern California named overall winner by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dame Julia Goodfellow.<\/p>\n<p>The inaugural\u00a0awards ceremony, which took place at the Skirball Cultural Centre\u00a0on 30 April,\u00a0preceded the University\u2019s <a title=\"50th Anniversary\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/50\/\">50<sup>th<\/sup> Anniversary<\/a>\u00a0<a title=\"Alumni &amp; Friends\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/alumni\/\">alumni<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/a>celebrations in Los Angeles 1 \u2013 3 May.<\/p>\n<p>The other winners were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Professor Adrian Johns, University of Chicago \u2013 Innovation in Academia for Arts and Culture<\/li>\n<li>Dr Helen Tempest, Florida International University \u2013 Innovation in Academia for Science and Technology<\/li>\n<li>Dr David Garman, University of Wisconsin Milwaukee \u2013 Innovation in Academia for Business and Entrepreneurship:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Professor Johns and Dr Tempest are former staff members at Kent.<br \/>\nThe Innovation in Academia awards were established by the University of Kent in partnership with <a title=\"BritWeek\" href=\"http:\/\/www.britweek.org\/\">BritWeek <i class=\"fa fa-external-link\"><\/i><\/a>. They honour individuals whose professional accomplishments have made a significant and lasting impact in the field of higher education and whose work and character have earned the respect and admiration of their professional colleagues. Nominations were open to those who are from or who have studied in Europe and are currently working, or have worked, in American higher education.<\/p>\n<p>Kent is the first UK university to partner with BritWeek for a higher education award. Formed as a non-profit organisation in Los Angeles in 2007, BritWeek celebrates creativity and innovation between the UK and the USA and now holds events in Los Angeles, Miami, Orange County (California), Orlando and San Francisco.
