The University of Kent is proud to announce that we have been officially recognised as a University of Sanctuary, joining a national network of institutions committed to creating a culture of welcome and belonging for people seeking sanctuary.
This award acknowledges the work taking place across our campus to provide a supportive environment for refugees and asylum seekers, from Sanctuary Scholarships and academic opportunities to community outreach and local partnerships. It is also a celebration of the resilience and determination of the Sanctuary Scholars themselves, many of whom have overcome extraordinary circumstances to pursue higher education.
One Sanctuary Scholar, Makomborero Haruzivishe, described the impact of his scholarship this way:
“The Sanctuary Scholarship at the University of Kent gave me hope in a hopeless world, re-connected me with ambitions I thought were lost. I am in charge today, empowered to chart my own path, strengthened by the indispensable support the Sanctuary Scholarship award has given me. I will forever be grateful.”
The recognition as a University of Sanctuary reflects our deep and ongoing commitment to ensuring access to education for all, regardless of background or immigration status. Since launching our Sanctuary Scholarships in 2019, we have supported five new undergraduate students each year with a full tuition fee waiver and a small maintenance grant—offering them not only the chance to study, but also a sense of belonging and a place to call home.
This milestone has only been possible thanks to the compassion and generosity of our University community—especially our donors, whose support has helped grow the Sanctuary Fund and increase the level of assistance available to students in need.
As we celebrate this important recognition, we invite you to continue showing your support. Your gift to the Sanctuary Fund will help students seeking sanctuary rebuild their lives, realise their academic ambitions and become part of a welcoming community at Kent. Please consider making a gift to the Sanctuary Fund and stand with students seeking safety and the chance to build a better future.
