It is with a great sense sorrow that we announce the passing of Robin Pitman OBE, a distinguished scientist and a beloved alumnus of the University of Kent, who passed away on 12th February.
Robin was a proud member of the First 500 students to attend the University of Kent in 1965. As part of the founding class, he was instrumental in helping shape the university’s early years, becoming one of the founding members of ‘InCant’, the first student newspaper, and he also started the whimsical ‘wear a gown around the town’ movement.
After graduating as part of the Physics Class of 1968, Robin maintained a strong bond with Kent throughout his life regularly attending reunions and remaining a respected and admired figure within our alumni community.
Following his studies, Robin embarked on a career in government science that spanned over four decades. He joined the UK Atomic Energy Authority’s Atomic Weapons Research Establishment in Aldermaston, where he worked in the Design Mathematics Division, making significant contributions to radiation-hydrodynamics and laser fusion research. His expertise in these complex scientific fields became a defining feature of his career, culminating in his return to the Ministry of Defence in 1994, where he became a key adviser in the office of the Assistant Chief Scientific Adviser (Nuclear).
Robin’s influence and dedication to his work were recognised in 2009, when he was awarded an OBE in the New Year’s Honours List for his exceptional contributions to government science and national security.
A man of great integrity and humility, Robin’s influence extended beyond his professional achievements. His presence at reunions and gatherings, where he would always take the time to reconnect with old friends and colleagues, will be sadly missed by everyone at Kent.
Robin is survived by his devoted wife Iris.
