At the University of Kent, we believe in the power of education to transform lives. That’s why we are so proud of our Sanctuary Scholarship Programme, which offers a life-changing opportunity for students who have had to flee their home countries due to conflict or persecution. Through this programme, we provide a pathway to higher education for those who need it most, offering financial support, a welcoming community and the chance to rebuild their futures.
One of our current Sanctuary Scholars, Mako, has been featured in the press, telling his remarkable story of survival and hope. Originally from Syria, Mako was forced to flee his country after it became engulfed in civil war. After a harrowing journey, he found refuge in the UK, where he was granted a place at the University of Kent through the Sanctuary Scholarship Programme.
In the article, Mako shares how the scholarship has transformed his life, allowing him to pursue his dream of studying law. He speaks candidly about the emotional and practical challenges he faced as a refugee and how the support from the University of Kent has made it possible for him to focus on his studies rather than worry about financial hardship.
“The scholarship has been life-changing for me,” Mako said. “It’s not just about the financial support, but about the sense of belonging and community that Kent offers. It’s a place where I can truly build my future.”
Mako also discusses the role that Amnesty International and the House of Lords have played in advocating for refugees and asylum seekers. He hopes that his story can inspire others to not only pursue education but also to understand the importance of providing support to those displaced by conflict.
We are incredibly proud of Mako and all our Sanctuary Scholars, who embody the spirit of resilience and determination. Their stories remind us of the power of education and the importance of providing hope to those who have faced unimaginable hardships. At the University of Kent, we are committed to continuing our Sanctuary Scholarship Programme, which plays a crucial role in offering a brighter future for those who have had their lives disrupted by conflict and persecution.
Through the Sanctuary Fund, we are expanding our support to ensure that more students like Mako can access the education they deserve. Our scholars are not just future leaders in their fields; they are also ambassadors of hope, resilience and courage.
As the world faces growing challenges related to migration and conflict, we remain steadfast in our commitment to providing opportunities for those who need it most. Mako’s story is just one of many and we are excited to see the impact our Sanctuary Scholars will have in the years to come.
