Canterbury and District Branch of Parkinson’s UK Programme of Events

The Canterbury and District Branch of Parkinson’s UK are organising a number of events over the coming months. They would be delighted to see you there!

Active Exercise Class – Michal Widyma continues to offer his class on Zoom on Mondays between 6pm and 7pm. He can take one or two more participants, whom he will first need to assess (on line). The Branch will pay for this initial assessment. If you join, you will be asked to donate £5 per session. Contact Michal on mwrehab.info@gmail.com or on 07922 607945 after 5 pm.

Afternoon Tea at the Riverside Vineyard Church from 2.00-4.00 pm on the third Monday of each month in The Riverside Café, Riverside Church, Thanet Way, Whitstable CT5 3JQ (please note that the church is accessed via Reeves Way and then signposted on to the unnamed road that runs parallel to Thanet Way). Plenty of free on-site parking and full disabled access. Refreshments are available for sale.  Everyone is welcome. (Contacts: Nora Spencer on 01227 273275 and June Bushell on 01227 860783).

Coffee Morning at Strode Park from 10.30 am on the first Saturday of each month in the Rise Hall Suite, which is round the back of Strode Park House, Lower Herne Road, Herne CT6 7NE. Gentle Gym from 12.30 pm until 2.10 pm each Friday at the Renaissance Fitness and Wellbeing Centre, 41 Dover, Street, Canterbury CT1 3HQ. We are now able to include tea/coffee/biscuits and socialising. For more information please contact Marion Gilbert (01227 760772).

Movement to Music from 1.00 to 3.00 pm every Thursday in the Tesco Extra Community Space, Millstrood Road, Whitstable CT5 3EE. Access is via the main door of the shop and is well signposted to the right of the Customer Service Desk. The class is designed as a seated exercise class which exercises the body
to music. We have a 30 minute break for tea and chat followed by 30 minutes of Tai Chi exercise, so the exercise period in total is around 80 minutes with a break in the middle. The more mobile participants may like to do the exercises standing. The class is available to all abilities. (Contact: Marion Gilbert on 01227
760772 or kenandmarion2@talktalk.net).

Reflexology For some years now our local branch has been subsidising reflexology sessions for people with Parkinson’s. It is a wonderful complementary therapy which has helped many people with ongoing conditions and is a safe and natural therapy which helps to relax and balance the body against the stresses
of everyday life. Carers have benefitted as well. Sessions are held on one Thursday per month at the Thanington Neighbourhood Resource Centre, Thanington Road, CT1 3XE. It is on the A28 on the outskirts of Canterbury and has reserved parking. The subsidised cost per half hour session is £15. For more
information or to book an appointment, please contact Kathryn Ovenden (kjovenden@hotmail.com or 07708 337649) or Paul Spackman (pncspackman@hotmail.com or 01227 772564 or 07535 560120).

Skylarks Canterbury Skylarks singing sessions are held every Tuesday afternoon in term time. Everyone is welcome – even if you feel singing is not for you, please do give it a go, the sessions are uplifting and fun! Once a fortnight sessions are held at Simon Langton Boys’ School (these are also ‘live streamed’ so you can join online if you are not able to attend in person). The alternate weeks are on Zoom and Lucy Markes emails a reminder and the link each week. (Contact: Lucy Markes lucymarkes@btinternet.com).

Zoom Online Weekly Quiz Sessions Join us for some fun, test your general knowledge, learn new facts and meet PWP (People with Parkinson’s), branch members and carers every Wednesday starting at 3 pm for about an hour. Email Tim Halling if you are interested in joining the quiz and he will send you the Zoom instruction sheet and the link (hallingtim@hotmail.com).
