On Wednesday 7th November 2012, the Rt Hon Lady Hale of Richmond gave a lecture entitled ‘The Supreme Court and the UK Constitution’ to an overflowing lecture theatre full of students, staff, alumni and friends of the University of Kent. Her lecture was most interesting and prompted a number of questions from the audience. The transcript of the lecture is now available online.
Lady Hale is Justice of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom, which was set up in October 2009 to take over the jurisdiction of the Law Lords in the House of Lords. She was the first woman Law Lord and is the first and currently the only woman Justice of the UK Supreme Court. Unlike most UK judges, she has had a varied career, as an academic lawyer, a member of the Law Commission (a statutory body set up to promote law reformation), and judge of the High Court, Court of Appeal and now the Supreme Court. She is President of both the United Kingdom Association of Women Judges and the International Association.
