{"id":201,"date":"2023-10-05T20:43:18","date_gmt":"2023-10-05T19:43:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/cyber-institute-news\/?p=201"},"modified":"2023-10-05T20:43:40","modified_gmt":"2023-10-05T19:43:40","slug":"icss-members-promoted-to-more-senior-positions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/cyber-institute-news\/2023\/10\/05\/icss-members-promoted-to-more-senior-positions\/","title":{"rendered":"iCSS members promoted to more senior positions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We are delighted to announce that three Core Members of the Institute of Cyber Security for Society (iCSS) at the University of Kent have been promoted to more senior positions: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/computing\/people\/3183\/franqueira-virginia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr Virginia Franqueira<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/computing\/people\/3103\/nurse-jason\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr Jason Nurse<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/computing\/people\/3060\/perez-delgado-carlos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr Carlos Perez-Delgado<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr Virginia Franqueira<\/strong>, iCSS\u2019s Deputy Director (Education) and Director of the University of Kent\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncsc.gov.uk\/information\/ace-cse-gold-and-silver-awards\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Academic Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security Education (ACE-CSE)<\/a> (Gold award, 2023-29), has been promoted to Senior Lecturer in Cyber Security. <a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.co.uk\/citations?hl=en&amp;user=Efmxnd4AAAAJ\">Virginia\u2019s research<\/a> mainly focuses on digital forensics from the perspective of adapting theories and techniques from other disciplines to improve the investigative process, primarily exploring technology-facilitated interpersonal crimes such as cyberstalking, intimate partner violence, and child sexual exploitation and abuse. More recently, she has also been focusing on cyber security pre-university education and protection for children against online harms. She is a member of the EURASIP (European Association for Signal Processing) Technical Area Committee on <a href=\"https:\/\/eurasip.org\/technical-area-committees\/\">BForSec (Biometrics, Data Forensics, and Security)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Franqueira said: \u2018<em>I am very happy with the news of my promotion to Senior Lecturer at the University of Kent. It is great to be part of Kent\u2019s dynamic Institute of Cyber Security for Society (iCSS) and contribute to its excellence in cyber security education and research, surrounded by amazing colleagues.<\/em>\u2019<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr Jason Nurse<\/strong>, iCSS\u2019s Public Engagement Lead, was promoted to Reader in Cyber Security. <a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.co.uk\/citations?user=nZbb6xwAAAAJ&amp;hl=en\">Jason\u2019s research<\/a> explores the interdisciplinary nature of cyber security, privacy, and trust. This especially considers the impact of new technologies (e.g., smart tech, AI) on these areas. Currently, his research focus is on human aspects of security, mitigating the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S016740482300072X\">threat of ransomware and its harms<\/a>, and cyber insurance as a means for improving corporate security. Some highlights of his work include being appointed as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Tpk6lvlRGhA\">Director of Science &amp; Research<\/a> at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cybsafe.com\/\">CybSafe,<\/a> co-chairing the Advisory Board of the <a href=\"https:\/\/riscs.org.uk\/\">Research Institute for Sociotechnical Cyber Security (RISCS)<\/a>, and being awarded funding for a new EPSRC\/UKRI project titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/gow.epsrc.ukri.org\/NGBOViewGrant.aspx?GrantRef=EP\/X037282\/1\">Enhancing Cyber Resilience of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises through Cyber Security Communities of Support<\/a>\u201d (2023-26).<\/p>\n<p>Dr Nurse said: \u2018<em>It\u2019s fabulous news and I\u2019m really honoured to be promoted to Reader. The University of Kent continues to be an excellent university for cyber security research and education, and each year we build on our experience and expertise. I particularly value our interdisciplinary approach to security and our strength as a team of academics, practitioners and students, all dedicated to significantly advancing the field.<\/em>\u2019<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr Carlos Perez-Delgado<\/strong>, iCSS\u2019s Core Member, has been promoted to Senior Lecturer in Quantum Computing. <a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.co.uk\/citations?hl=en&amp;user=7Soe-HoAAAAJ\">Carlos\u2019 research<\/a> focuses on quantum information technologies, cyber security, and the intersection of these two areas. \u00a0Carlos has given keynotes and talks about his work around the world. Recently, he was invited to give the keynote address at a conference in La Paz, Mexico, and published a chapter in a book titled <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/chapter\/10.1007\/978-3-031-05324-5_6\"><em>Quantum Software Engineering<\/em><\/a> (Springer). His research has been showcased in popular media sites and magazines such as <em>Forbes<\/em> and <em>New Scientist<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Perez-Delgado said, \u2018<em>I wholeheartedly congratulate my colleagues on their promotions.
