Dr Jennifer Leigh, together with Dr Helen Leech in Research Services, Hannah Greer in Careers and Employability Services and a team of academics and professional services staff have run and evaluated the Summer Vacation Research Competition since 2018. The competition is designed to support Post-Doctoral Research Associates / Assistants (PDRAs) to apply for research funding and run a successful project. It targets Widening Participation (WP) Undergraduates (UG) to give them experience of applying for and taking part in cutting edge research. In 2020, there were over 150 UG applicants for 5 winning projects, and 78% of the UGs were from WP backgrounds.
