{"id":91,"date":"2021-08-09T12:42:03","date_gmt":"2021-08-09T11:42:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/criminology\/?page_id=91"},"modified":"2021-10-14T13:33:34","modified_gmt":"2021-10-14T12:33:34","slug":"crim-year-1","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/criminology\/canterbury-2\/crim-year-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Stage 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The aim of the first year in each of the <strong>five different Criminology UG programmes<\/strong> we offer, is to provide you with a general understanding and an interdisciplinary take on criminology.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/courses\/undergraduate\/234\/criminology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BA Criminology<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/courses\/undergraduate\/203\/criminology-and-cultural-studies\">BA Criminology and Cultural Studies<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/courses\/undergraduate\/202\/criminology-and-social-policy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BA Criminology and Social Policy &amp; Social Change<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/courses\/undergraduate\/360\/criminology-and-sociology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BA Criminology and Sociology<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/courses\/undergraduate\/1374\/criminology-with-quantitative-research\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BA Criminology with Quantitative Research<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Criminology students also have the opportunity to <strong>spend a year or a term abroad at one of our partner institutions in North America, Asia and Europe<\/strong>. You don\u2019t have to make a decision before you enrol at Kent. The programme only runs from the second year onwards.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #333399\">Core Criminology Modules<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>These modules are <strong>compulsory <\/strong>across all Criminology programmes.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>SOCI3050 I<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/courses\/modules\/module\/SOCI3050\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ntroduction to Criminology<\/a> (15 credits) &#8211; Autumn term<\/li>\n<li>SOCI3330 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/courses\/modules\/module\/SOCI3330\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Crime and Society<\/a> (15 credits) &#8211; Spring term<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However, each criminology programme adds <strong>another unique set of compulsory modules <\/strong>(see the next section).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #333399\">Build Your Programme!<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Full-time students have to take modules amounting to a total of <strong>120 (Level 4) credits &#8211; <\/strong>60 credits in Autumn &amp; 60 credits in Spring. Students are to <strong>build their own criminology course along the subject requirements for each programme<\/strong>. These are listed in the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/csao\/files\/handbooks\/divoflawsocietysocialjustice.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> LSSJ Module Handbook<\/a> which indicates per programme the modules that are &#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Compulsory or &#8216;<em>mandatory<\/em>&#8216; modules:\u00a0 \u00a0You have to take these.<\/li>\n<li>Recommended modules or &#8216;<em>optiona<\/em>l&#8217; modules:\u00a0 \u00a0These are modules delivered by the school (no timetable clashes between modules are garantueed).<\/li>\n<li>Elective or &#8216;<em>wild<\/em>&#8216; modules:\u00a0 \u00a0They are modules organised by other schools (timetable clashes between modules are NOT garantueed).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #333399\">Change Programmes?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you want to change programmes, you can apply for a course change. How?<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Explore<\/strong> the five criminology programmes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Talk<\/strong> to your Academic Advisor.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fill out\u00a0<\/strong>the required <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/csao\/your-studies\/coc_form.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">form<\/a> or get an idea of what you might like to do.
