Real-world opportunities

We have excellent connections to industry, through our staff, alumni and our Music Academic Partnership with UK Music.

Many of our staff are also industry professionals, working as performers or producers in their own right, as well as sitting on numerous industry bodies such as the Musician’s Union Education Committee and Writers Committee, The Council of Music Makers, The Ivors Academy Songwriting Committee and the UK Music Copyright Committee.

You have the opportunity to visit working studios and industry events such as BBC Introducing Live. You can even add a year in industry to your course and spend a whole year gaining valuable real-world experience.

If teaching is something you’re interested in exploring, you can apply to be a CMAT Ambassador to get paid work experience doing outreach activities in local schools.

Unique Location

Located in the heart of Medway towns in Kent at the Chatham Historic Dockyard, you study in a most unique setting. Just 40 minutes from London by train, CMAT is the perfect location for those who want to stay close to the capital.

The Dockyard first opened in 1567 and was an active Royal Navy Dockyard until 1984. Nestled within the historic buildings, our modern facilities are neatly juxtaposed with the history of the site. The Chatham Historic Dockyard itself is an award-winning tourist attraction, and is used as a location for many films and TV series.

Live performances

If you’re a performer you have lots of opportunity to showcase your skills at Kent. Join one of our ensemble groups, take part in the Music Society’s weekly nights, perform in the performance spaces on campus such as the Galvanising Shop Café or put on your own nights in the local area. We even host a live music television show with local TV station KMTV.

Our community

Universities at Medway is a compact campus, and CMAT’s classes are kept small. This means you have plenty of access to the studios, practice rooms and labs for your own work.

With music production spanning all three undergraduate courses, whether your focus is on music business, performance or technology you’ll get to know all of your peers studying music at Kent. This helps us maintain the Music at Medway community that we hope you’ll be part of.

Read an interview with one of our current students, Caitlin, to find how why she chose Kent and what she enjoys most about studying here.
