One thing I’ve learned about being back in full-time studies (after spending a couple of years working in the industry) is that the best way to make the most of my academic journey is to integrate it into my whole life. Instead of assuming that progress comes from isolating myself and burying my head in books, I’m not about that “ivory tower” scientist life—where I never see the light of day and spend all my time in the lab. I’m here for balance.
I appreciate that my generation of academics places significant emphasis on wellbeing—the overall health of our minds, bodies, spirits, and everything in between. Because of this, I’ve grown to love the many things Kent (as a county) offers while I work toward my PhD. Below are some of my favourite things about this area.
- A Range of Fun Activities
There’s always something to do around Kent, not just on campus but in the wider area too. Whether you’re looking to relax or spend energy, there’s something for everyone. My go-to spot for finding events is a local charity that supports international students in the UK by organizing social events tailored specifically for them (local students are welcome too!). Check them out on Instagram: @ficanterbury.
- Local Festivals and Fairs
Canterbury is rich in culture and history, and you can always find an event to reflect that. Whether it’s theatre productions, art shows, or visits to museums, there’s no shortage of cultural activities. Plus, I love how affordable many of these experiences are—they’re perfect for a fun yet wholesome day out. Here are some useful links you can use to find these:
- Visit Canterbury’s Events Page: This comprehensive calendar features a wide range of events happening in Canterbury, Herne Bay, Whitstable, and the surrounding areas. You can filter events by category and date to find fairs and festivals that suit your interests – canterbury.co.uk
- Canterbury Festival: Kent’s international arts festival takes place annually in October and November, offering a diverse program of music, theatre, dance, and more. It’s a highlight of the cultural calendar in Canterbury – canterburyfestival.co.uk
For a broader selection of festivals, you can also explore listings on Eventbrite, which provides various events happening in and around Canterbury – https://www.eventbrite.com/d/united-kingdom–canterbury/festivals/?utm_source=chatgpt.com
- For the Quieter Ones
I consider myself a bit of an ambivert (though “connected/social introvert” might be a better description). I find it restful and refreshing to reset in quieter, slower-paced environments. Canterbury has plenty of spots that cater to this. From peaceful meadows and beautiful hiking trails to cosy coffee shops and even a cat café (which is an absolute treat), there’s no shortage of tranquil spots to unwind.
- A Blend of Technology and Tradition
While the UK’s technological advancements often dazzle, I’m continuously amazed by how well they’ve blended modern progress with the charm of “old school” things. It’s refreshing to see innovation happening without completely losing touch with the traditions that make this place unique.
To be fair, I’ve only begun to scratch the surface of all that Kent has to offer after just six months here. But I’m excited to keep exploring and would love to hear about your favourite spots!
Until next time!
