looking to a scientific future with Kent apprentice, Martin Domville.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>The apprenticeship experience<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When he left school \u2013 intending to go down the traditional university route \u2013 Martin decided to look into alternative options that would better suit him.\u00a0 He has found that the apprenticeship path suits him, providing a combination of knowledge and practical experience which has allowed him to build a strong foundation at work.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u2018I have confidence to build a career in science and by doing an apprenticeship I feel like I am in an advantageous position for the future.\u2019<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While Martin has found that the life of an apprentice is probably less social than that of a traditional university student, he is glad to have been able to work and learn close to home, make great friends and have the structure and routine that an apprenticeship provides.\u00a0 His experience has given him the confidence to build a career in science.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_634\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-634\" style=\"width: 584px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-634\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/chda\/files\/2019\/08\/work-in-science-week.jpg\" alt=\"UCB work in science week\" width=\"584\" height=\"567\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/chda\/files\/2019\/08\/work-in-science-week.jpg 593w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/chda\/files\/2019\/08\/work-in-science-week-300x291.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-634\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Martin first visited UCB when he was 16 as part of the annual Work in Science Week event, designed to let students sample life as a scientist.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>\u2018Go for it!\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When asked what advice he would give other young people interested in a career in science, Martin said, \u2018Go for it!\u2019<\/p>\n<p>He advised looking into all of the available options to decide what is best for you.\u00a0 In his experience, science is a level playing field \u2013 no one field of science is better or worse than another, and no way of getting into science is better or worse than another.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u2018Work in Science solidified my thinking that I wanted to be a scientist and I hope that we give other students this insight too.\u2019<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Martin also advised that those looking into a career in science should take every opportunity to understand what being a scientist is.\u00a0 Since working at UCB, Martin has helped at every <em>Work in Science Week<\/em> for that exact reason.\u00a0 This is because <em>Work in Science<\/em> solidified his desire to be a scientist, and he wants other students to get this insight too.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Science Industry Partnership\u2019s interview with Martin Domville can be found here: https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/science-industry-partnership_apprenticeship-case-study-looking-to-a-activity-6572070295782465536-PCjr<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>More information about University of Kent\u2019s degree apprenticeships are available here:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/apprenticeships\/current-apprenticeships.html\">https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/apprenticeships\/current-apprenticeships.html<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Martin, who is a degree apprentice at UCB, first visited the company as a teenager during the annual Work in Science Week event.\u00a0 This event, &hellip;
