International Women’s Day (IWD) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. It’s a day to reflect on progress, challenge barriers and push for a more inclusive future.
This year’s theme is Accelerate Action which emphasises the urgency in advancing gender equality across all sectors. Currently, it will take until 2158 to reach full gender parity. So, Accelerate Action calls for increased momentum to address and diminish this.
How Apprenticeships Are Breaking Barriers for Women
Apprenticeships play a key role in creating opportunities for women across various industries. In 2023/24, 52% of apprenticeship starters were women, proving that more women than ever are choosing this route to build their careers. From healthcare to engineering, digital technology to economics, apprenticeships are equipping women with the skills and experience needed to thrive in traditionally male-dominated fields. No career path should be limited by gender and apprenticeships are a step in the right direction to building a more diverse and dynamic workforce.
It is important to acknowledge however, that while more women than ever are entering apprenticeships, barriers still remain. This is especially true for women from underrepresented backgrounds. They often face additional challenges, including systemic bias and a lack of representation in leadership roles.
The role of employers in creating an inclusive workplace
Representation alone is not enough, employers must take active steps to create inclusive workplaces where everyone feels valued and people’s differences are celebrated. Through having open conversations about inclusivity, challenging stereotypes and using gender-neutral language, employers can make a real difference to their workforce practices. This paves the way for a future where everyone has an equal opportunity to succeed.
A word from our apprentices
International Women’s Day holds special meaning for our apprentices. Here’s what it means to them and how they are championing Accelerate Action in their workplaces:
“Representation is so much more than just visibility. When we see diverse women breaking barriers, we’re reminded that no dream is out of reach. Seeing women who share my background and aspirations makes the impossible feel achievable. International Women’s Day is a reminder that diversity isn’t just about inclusion—it’s about empowerment. My vision for the future is one where opportunities are truly equal, and every woman has the confidence to step forward, knowing she belongs.”
– Aaminah Ahmed from Mondelēz International
“International Women’s Day is about championing each other and celebrating the successes of women across the world, big and small. As a Level 6 Laboratory Scientist Apprentice in oncology research and development, I am passionate about accelerating action towards equal access to science for women and girls. Recognising the critical role women play in STEM is essential for driving innovation and progress. Together we can break barriers, uplift one another, and create a future where everyone has the opportunity to thrive in science!“
– Mya Hornett from Astra Zeneca
This International Women’s Day, let’s continue to celebrate achievements, challenge barriers, and take action toward a more inclusive and equal future.
