Drama graduate and bass in this year’s Chamber Choir, Dave Newell<\/strong>, reveals his bardic side in this reflection on the choral year and Christmas carol-learning.<\/p>\n

\nA Singer\u2019s November<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2018Twas two months before Christmas,
\nUnder towers and spires,
\nSingers were bringing out
\nCarols for Choirs.<\/p>\n

Their friends all had bonfires,
\nGuy Fawkes to remember.
\nBut when you\u2019re in a Choir,
\nChristmas starts in November.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut Advent is ages away\u201d
\nTheir friends cry.
\n\u201cYou can\u2019t yet sing Ding Dong
\nMerrily on High\u201d<\/p>\n

Then the singers will turn
\nLike a great wounded beast.
\n\u201cDo you want Christmas
\nTo be a musical feast?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen we must take carol books
\nDown from the self,
\n\u2018Cos Christmas won\u2019t sing
\nThe damn carols itself.\u201d<\/p>\n

You look forward to Christmas
\nAnd I know that that\u2019s true.
\nBut remember the choirs
\nGet there much before you.<\/p>\n

See for singers the year
\nIs two months ahead,
\nSo do not be angry,
\nThink this way instead;<\/p>\n

Lent in January,
\nAll Saints in September,
\nEaster in February,
\nChristmas \u2013 November.<\/p>\n
