{"id":4776,"date":"2021-01-14T09:50:30","date_gmt":"2021-01-14T09:50:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/brussels-news-events\/?p=4776"},"modified":"2021-01-14T10:10:12","modified_gmt":"2021-01-14T10:10:12","slug":"phd-researcher-mark-gilks-publishes-article-in-the-british-journal-of-aesthetics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/brussels-news-events\/2021\/01\/14\/phd-researcher-mark-gilks-publishes-article-in-the-british-journal-of-aesthetics\/","title":{"rendered":"PhD researcher Mark Gilks publishes article in the British Journal of Aesthetics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mark Gilks\u2019 latest article, \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/bjaesthetics\/advance-article\/doi\/10.1093\/aesthj\/ayaa042\/6093146?guestAccessKey=dfe3d0d8-277e-4718-9666-b64441f4c0e2\">Aesthetic Experience and the Unfathomable: A Pragmatist Critique of Hermeneutic Aesthetics<\/a>\u2019, has been published by Oxford University Press\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/bjaesthetics\">British Journal of Aesthetics<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In this article, he critiques Gadamer\u2019s hermeneutics from the perspective of William James\u2019 Pragmatism, arguing that meaningful experience should not be decoupled from perception and existence.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This publication develops the philosophical foundations for Mark\u2019s PhD research, which examines the aesthetic experiences of war and how war-experience becomes meaningful for the soldier. In this PhD thesis, Mark argues that the \u201csoldier\u201d is not simply a docile being which is \u201cindoctrinated\u201d by the military institution into becoming violent, but is rather an agent whose aesthetic participation in the military institution is significant in bringing forth society\u2019s militarised structures.
