Ever since the decision of former President Yanukovych not to sign the Association Agreement with the EU, developments in Ukraine have taken unexpected and dramatic turns. His decision has triggered massive protests at Euromaidan. Violence against protesters has eventually led to the ousting of Yanukovych. But soon after the opposition\u2019s victory, the eyes of the world have turned to Crimea, where Russia\u2019s de facto invasion has created an extremely dangerous situation.<\/p>\n
Amidst these turbulent events Richard Youngs will give the next Jean Monnet lecture and reflect on Ukraine\u2019s difficult position in the light of its relations with the EU and of the Eastern Partnership. His lecture will be followed by a debate with Dr. Olga Burlyuk (University of Kent) and invited officials from the European Commission \/ EEAS.<\/p>\n
Dr Richard Youngs is a senior associate in the Democracy and Rule of Law Program of Carnegie Europe. He is a leading expert on the foreign policy of the European Union, in particular on questions of democracy support. He has published widely on the Middle East, the European neighbourhood, the current EU crisis, and energy security. He is the author of many milestone academic articles and his seventh book The Uncertain Legacy of Crisis: European Foreign Policy Faces the Future is about to be published.<\/p>\n
