We are delighted to announce that we have new scholarship opportunities available for PhD applicants, and we are looking forward to expanding our research community at the University of Kent’s the Brussels School of International Studies (BSIS).

Kent Law School Next Generation Law Doctoral Scholarships will be awarded to up to 2 candidates with research proposals of the highest quality, for the Brussels Centre.

These Scholarships are designed to support research that aims to transform our understanding of law, in order to reshape its future relevance and build better legal answers to pressing questions about the theoretical, social, environmental, political, economic or technological challenges that define our times.

We particularly welcome proposals in sociolegal studies, law and the humanities, critical approaches to law, law and political economy, law and health, law and intellectual property, and law, science and technology.

The scholarship covers both the course fees (which would be €10,400) and will provide a stipend for living costs.

The stipend offered to the successful candidates will be €1,490 per month (€17,880 per year).

Those awarded KLS scholarships are not required to teach. However, as part of our commitment to support the next generation of legal academics, there are opportunities for doctoral students to undertake paid seminar teaching, or related duties, at the direction of the Head of School.

Applicants will be shortlisted for the Next Generation Law Doctoral Scholarship based on the academic and intellectual quality of their proposal, its contribution to the aims and objectives of the scholarship scheme, and its fit with the proposed or potential KLS academic supervisor(s).

To be eligible, applicants will need to have a strong academic research profile and either a Distinction or High Merit in their LLMs.

The research community at BSIS is a diverse and friendly group who benefit from close access to professors, a research-active environment with exposure to practitioners from Brussels-based organisations and the interdisciplinary nature of the School and its location.

Home to the main institutions of the European Union and numerous organisations, such as think tanks, lobby groups, NGOs, European lawmakers and in close proximity of the ICJ (International Court of Justice – the Hague) and the ECJ (European Court of Justice – Luxemburg), Brussels is at the heart of Europe.
