From the entire conference team – we extend our most sincere gratitude to all of the speakers, volunteers, attendees and supporters of the conference.
The day started off with a keynote address by Dr. Richard Sakwa from the University of Kent. Dr. Sakwa discussed the importance of nationalism and populism in 2019; setting the stage for further lively dialogue throughout the day.
The first panel of the morning – Securitisation of the Migrant: At the Border & Beyond – was a discussion on migration management, and the effects that it has on migrants living in Europe and beyond. Speakers on the panel included Thomas Huddleston, Kumut Imesh, Pia Klemp, Gulwali Passarlay and was moderated by Marianna Karakoulaki. The panelists represented a variety of backgrounds which enhanced the discussion with the experience that they each brought.
The second panel – Security and Defense: A Geostrategic Perspective on Political Extremism – brought in the perspective of NATO military and academic personnel, as well as European defense scholars and analysts. The panel discussed the importance of enhanced security within the scope of nationalism and populism, and how international organizations like NATO prepare to tackle the issues. The speakers on this panel were Dr. Jamie Shea, Dr. Jordan Becker, Dr. Andras Szalai, Col. Darryl Rupp and was moderated by Dr. Daniel Fiott.
The day finished off with the third panel – The Role of Media: Instrumentalising Nationalism and Populism. The diverse panel of journalists, scholars and film makers brought alternative opinions from their respective fields. The speakers on this panel were Dr. Hans-Georg Betz, Mikey Kay and Renate Schroeder and was moderated by Marta Kotwas.
