Tuesday 17 November 16.00 – 18.00 CET
PhD researcher Laura Skillen has been invited to discuss at an online roundtable as part of the project: Keeping Channels Open: Beyond Brexit & Trump, supported by Friedrich Naumann Foundation – a strategic dialogue and network aimed at identifying ways to maintain channels of positive cooperation between EU, UK and US. An introductory roundtable in September generated excellent contributions from politicians and governance practitioners, experts and analysts, strategists and influencers.
The online seminar, held under Chatham House Rules, will last 1.5 hours with optional extra 30 minutes for informal discussion.
Selected speakers will frame the discussions, allowing space for free interaction on this essential topic. A roundtable report will be circulated after the event.
Managing Culture Wars, Tribalism and Disinformation will explore the roots, psychology and tactics behind today’s culture wars and identity politics, and effective ways to engage in these battles.
The experts will explore the risks to liberal democracy and societal cohesion from anti-system, anti-immigrant and populist politics and polarising notions of nation-states versus global governance; liberal left-wing ‘elites’ vs conservative right-wing ‘patriots’; citizens versus foreigners; Remainers versus Brexiters… and other fault lines.
Calling on a range of perspectives from Britain, Europe and America, strategies will be considered to manage culture wars for media and communicators, politicians and community leaders, youth and activists. The discussants will also seek to identify joint initiatives to better manage public debate and establish a basis for rational discourse, compromise and common ground that could bring our societies together.
In 2021, this project hopes to explore the themes of connecting cities and regions after Brexit; common ground in Transatlantic Foreign Policy and Security; and the power of networks. We also plan to join forces with you on some communications and projects around the best suggestions as we move forward.
