Dr Tom Casier, BSIS PhD researcher Susanne Szkola and Dr Maria Mälksoo at the UPTAKE consortium workshop on culture and emotions in politics and IR, Tartu, Estonia, 21-22 April 2017.

Dr Tom Casier, BSIS PhD student Susanne Szkola and Dr Maria Mälksoo participated at the UPTAKE consortium workshop ‘Ontological Status of Culture and Emotions in Politics and IR’ at the University of Tartu, Estonia on 21-22 April, 2017.

This UPTAKE workshop brought into focus three core themes that the conceptually innovative and empirically rich scholarship on emotions and culture in politics and IR have highlighted as particularly challenging: (1) the individual-collective nexus of political emotions, (2) the agency-structure problem as applied to the study of emotions and culture, and (3) the methodology of researching emotions and culture in politics and IR. The workshop was co-organised by Dr Tom Casier, Dr Maria Mälksoo and Prof. Viacheslav Morozov (University of Tartu).

Dr Casier presented a paper ‘Russian foreign policy and the mobilisation of humiliation’. Susanne Szkola presented her research on the ‘Ontological security seeking and rationales: a tripartite take on motivational factors’.
