The first of a new Guest Lecture Series kicks off with:
‘The Crisis of New Europe’s Secularism: The “Challenge” of Islam in France and Belgium?’
Prof. Paul Silverstein
Part of the BSIS ‘Interrogating Our Multiple Crises’ Guest Lecture Series
Wednesday 19 October 2016
Professor Paul Silverstein (Reed College, Portland, USA) will be giving the first instalment of the new BSIS Guest Lecture Series on Wednesday 19th October at the Brussels School of International Studies.
Lecture Synopsis:
Islam is being increasingly treated as a “challenge” to, and even a “problem” for, rather than a constitutive part of Europe. Muslims today assert their Islamic piety in a variety of ways within their French and Belgian identity, even as they challenge Islamophobia and call for a fundamental rethinking of what it means to be European. The lecture addresses these struggles as a central defining moment for the future of a postcolonial, post-Cold War Europe.
