Guest lecture by Sir Michael Leigh on EU external policy on enlargement

Date:  Wed 9 April
Time: Starts at 19.00
Place: Wilson Room

Sir Michael Leigh is a former European Commission Director-General for enlargement, and at the DG for External Relations, was previously responsible for European Neighbourhood Policy, relations with Eastern Europe, the Southern Caucus, Central Asia,  the Middle East and the Mediterranean countries.
On Wednesday 9 April, 19.00 – 21.00 as part of the Political Strategy module convened by Dr NoelleAnne O’Sullivan, he will speak about the roots of the EU external policy on enlargement, touching on issues such as enlargement fatigue and the limits of enlargement strategy in the current climate. Does EU strategy on enlargement, accession and membership criteria require a re-think?
Particular focus will be given to Eastern Europe and the EU strategy towards Ukraine and its neighbours, as well as relations with Turkey and the Eastern Mediterranean. Are there geo-political limits on the expansion of the EU’s borders? What is the EU strategy behind the Eastern Partnership agreements, and how does enlargement strategy reflect the EU’s ambitions for a stronger global role?
As a senior advisor at the German Marshall Fund of the United States in Brussels, Michael will also address the ways EU neighbourhood policy aligns with US global political strategy.
